| The earlier you act, the earlier your position is. So, being directly to the left of the button puts you in the earliest position (although you won't act first before the flop, you will on every other round). SpaceAce | ||

| Hi, If you are acting directly after the blinds (which would leave you being left of the blinds and UTG: "Under The Gun"), then you are in first position. The closer you are to the right of the button, the later you are in relation to your position, (LP). If you are directly right of the button, then you are in the cut-off spot. First to act preflop: bad position, as your starting hands need to be very strong in this spot. Last to act: best position - you get the most information that way, and you sometimes can make more liberal calls (getting good pot odds, etc.)...and/or, you can raise more when the situation warrants it. > It's good to be the button!! 4P- | ||

| Well, your position is early, however, in relation to your starting hands, you can generally play looser than the UTG postion when in the blinds, if the pots is not raised. In fact, obviously, you can play any two cards in the BB in an unraised pot because you get to see the flop for "free." In the SB, it really depends on how big the SB is in relation to the full bet. If it is 1/3, then don't play too loose, if it is 1/2 loosen up some, if it is 2/3 play almost anything. But once the flop comes out, you are back to being in EP, and must play that way. -Moz "One November spawned a monster in the shape of this child..." | ||

| Sometimes people talk about their Pre-Flop positions as being in Early Position, Middle Position, or Late Position - in regards to Pre-Flop decisions. In a Ten Player game my understading is starting with the UTG first player to the left of the BB, the first 3 are EP, the next 3 are MP, and the last two - Cuttoff and Button - are late position. Hope this helps. Of course, after the flop is a different story. If the blinds play they are in the earliest positions for the rest of the hand. But EP, MP, and LP are usually discussed in relation to Pre-Flop play. | ||

| My understanding is that early is the first three after the BB, middle is the next three and the last two are late. The SB and BB retain their title after the flop even though they act earlier than early position from the flop on to the completion of the hand. | ||

| UTG is 3 left of the button *assuming double blind game* better way to think about it is *and translates to other games* how much information have you received about this hand? UTG none since noone has acted yet, early position not much since few have had a chance to act, middle position some info since a few have acted, late reasonable amount since most have acted. in general the idea is the later you act the more information you have to make your betting decision with which is good.
