a book review of "Middle Limit Hold'em" by Ciaffone & Brier, noiseboy, 13. Nov 2003 09:17

This book completely rocks and, in my opinion, is much more useable and practical than HEPFAP. First off, there are literally hundreds of hand problems which explain in detail the factors that go into the correct decision. Secondly, it is very well organized and if you think you are having a specific problem with your game, for example, not knowing when a value bet is appropriate on the river, you will be able to easily find many examples that illustrate the concepts behind the decision and quickly eliminate the leak. Thirdly, they correct some of the mistakes in HEPFAP. They are polite enough to disguise it with such vagaries as "Some poker authors have advised...", but you will find clear explanations of why certain passages in HEPFAP are just plain wrong. Don't get me wrong, most of HEPFAP is very good, but there are a few passages that left me thinking "HUH??? What are they talking about" and these passages are addressed in the work by Caffione & Brier.

That's about it, overall this book is highly recommended and will help you to win at the middle limits which is the authors' goal in writing it.

Just want to echo noise's endorsement. It is an extremely useful, practical guide--more so than HEFAP. In defense of HEFAP, though, I think it does a better job of explaining the differences between types of games (tight/loose; passive/aggressive; short/full) and explaining how to adjust your game to fit each circumstance.

Ciaffone and Brier advise a quintessential tight/aggressive strategy. I thought I played this way, but working my way through their examples, I found they consistently played both tighter (throwing away hands when, as they say, "dark clouds are on the horizon" even when you're probably still ahead) and more aggressively, especially when short-handed (with 6 or 7 in the pot, they'll back off, but if you're down to heads-up or 3-handed, they'll tell you to bet, bet, bet).

I generally play at lower limits, or at the low end of "mid-limit," but I've consistently found C8B's analyses to be helpful. At the lower limit calling station tables, I make fewer semi-bluffs on draws and rarely make fancy deceptive plays, but with those exceptions, I think their advice still applies.

Bottom line: Noise is dead-on right. It's a must read.

A lot of the advice in HEPFAP is good, but C&B's book has so many specific examples, and focuses directly in on so many of the traps that players fall into and lose their bets. The worst part of HEPFAP is the so-called "quizzes" which basically only reiterate word for word things already covered by rote, and do not require the reader to apply concepts and take them into new situations. By comparison the test questions in C&B require a lot of thought and application of the ideas in the related chapters.

You are right, however, that C&B pretty much focus in on the "average" middle limit game and do not take table conditions into account very much. For instance, yesterday I was playing in a 15/30 game that was as loose and crazy as a no fold'em 3/6 game in CA. I think for this type of table, the books by Jones and Carson are more useful.

Anyway, in the near future I've decided to turn pro, and this is the book I'll be reading for the twentieth time when I am not at the tables, along with the Championship series by Cloutier when I'm doing tourneys and Super System and Caffione's big bet poker book when I'm playing NL ring games.

noiseboy - I have been in touch with Ciaffone recently and he has agreed to do a chat session for me with poker players. Anyway, I will be sending an e-mail out to all our regulars at these events, but for those who are not familar with his book, I would like to include a reveiw. Anyway, I was wondering if you might give me permission to use extracts from the review you have posted here. Great perspective with some interesting points. If you would rather not, no problem....

Thought it was worth asking....
Thanks

Sure! Use anything you want. Pretty much anything I'm posting here is public domain or whatever.

my email is bobby@tenspeed.com.

BTW if you are in contact with Caffione, tell him that I think he should do a similar book on NL. I like his Big Bet poker book, but it's not specific enough to NL Hold'em. I want a big fat book of example hands like "Middle Limit Hold'em"!!!!

Ciaffone has done a no-limit book. I believe the title is Pot Limit and No Limit Poker by Ciaffone & Ruebens

I know, I have it, it's not bad. However, it's not specific to NL holdem and it doesn't have enough depth because of the wide variety of games it tries to cover. I'm talking about a book just like Middle Limit Holdem but about NL Holdem. One that has hundreds of practical examples.
