Are the $15/$30 players at PartyPoker amazingly good or amazingly BAD?, SpaceAce, 13. Nov 2003 03:27 | ||

| I don't have the roll neccesary for $15/$30 games but I like to watch. It's a bit tough to get close to higher limits in a lot of the brick and mortar casinos so I do a lot of my watching online. I've watched the $15/$30 games at PartyPoker quite a lot and I can hardly believe some of the (apparently) crappy plays I see. Here are examples from the last five minutes: A = Seat 5 B = Seat 7 C = Seat 9 Call/check pre-flop. Flop comes Q-X-Q. A bets, C calls (B was not yet in the game). Turn is a King. A bets, C calls. River is an 8. A checks, C bets, A raises, C re-raises, A calls. C turns up A8o and wins with queens and eights. I don't remember what X was, but it was higher than an eight. They both go nuts with raises at the end and the best hand is a paired eight? I don't think A even had Ace high. C had her entire stack except for $7 in on that hand with nothing until the river. Another hand: A and C are battling it out again, plenty of action. With three paints on the board, they both go to the river and A wins with a pair of pocket sevens. Another hand: C folds pre-flop. B raises the blind, A re-raises, B calls. The flop comes a garbage rainbow (Did I just coin a new term? I like it.) and A checks. B bets, A calls. Turn comes, A checks, B bets, A folds. Maybe I am just so far below their skill level that I can't even comprehend their play but to me it seems s-t-o-o-p-i-d to re-raise pre-flop and then just check after the flop only to call a bet from the other person. There were no straight or flush draws so if your hand is too weak to bet with it probably isn't going to improve at the turn. If it's going to cost you a bet, anyway, why not lead with it? B was the one who stopped raising pre-flop which indicates to me that she wasn't so sure about her hand after A re-raised. With all the raising pre-flop she probably wasn't holding garbage cards to match the board and would have folded or called. I don't think A was in danger of a raise and if he bets out, maybe B folds. Was it not a mistake for A to check after the flop? I see a lot of this going on at the $15/$30 tables. I'm sure some of it must be brilliant playing but the majority of it looks like someone gave a monkey a big bankroll and a computer. I also see a LOT of people buying in to the $15/$30 tables with $300-$400 dollars. That seems WAY low to me. I can't imagine sitting at those tables with less than $1,500 at the very bottom end. I would love to hear analyses from those of you who play in or at least watch these higher-stakes online games. Sometimes I find myself shaking my head and thinking, "What a buffoon". Are they really buffoons are is it me? SpaceAce | ||

| No, from what I saw I don't believe they are experts. However, I know my own limitations and I realize that it is at least possible that I just don't understand what they are up to. To me it LOOKS like they are not good at all but I see so many of them making what look like bad plays that I start to wonder if maybe they are making _good_ plays and I'm just too dumb to know it. I saw the same general silliness at the $100/$200 tables on PokerStars. SpaceAce | ||

| I play mostly 5-10 but have looked at the 15-30 from time to time wondering if it's worth a shot. One thing I'm not sure of is how the increased Small Blind structure might change the game. I know it should loosen it up but how much is the question? From what I saw it looked like play there was generaly tighter than 5-10 and more agrssive than 5-10 but not as tight as I think 5-10 would be if everyone played like me. I guess my estimate is the 15-30 is still beatable but not as beatable as the 5-10, which is what I would expect. It sounds to me like player A was a maniac at the table and other players were responding to him accordingly. I see this at 5-10 quite a bit. As soon as the maniac leaves the table though, everybody tighens up against each other. I would do more observing before forming any final conclusions about the 15-30 play generally. Also, I can't seem to really get into the play until I actually get into the game. That's just me though. | ||

| It's possible that A or C was responding to loose play by the other. This isn't the first time I've seen that sort of garbage at the $15/$0 tables, though. One thing Ihave noticed time and again over quite a few hours of watching the $15/$30 games is that no one ever seems to get up very much. The money just seems to get shuffled back and forth among the players. As far as how tight the games are, I would say they are less tight than I would expect from $15/$30. I think four people seeing the flop just about every time is too many but it is a lot tighter than the six or seven people who always see the flop in the lower limits. Thanks for the reply. I'd love to hear from more people who watch or play in those games. SpaceAce | ||
