What level does the play really begin to improve? $1/2, 2/4, 3/6 seem to be quite similar, with the garbage played, calling everything to the river, etc. At what level can you begin to "think outside the box" a little more. It seems at these low limits it is the cards rather than anything else that wins. As mentioned in a previous post, with 5 or more people seeing the river, the nuts seem to be the only winner.

Bankroll wise, I'm not ready to move to higher limits, but I feel like I want to get more sophisticated, which can't be done at these levels. And speaking of bankroll, should I wait until I "build" the $ through the lower limits or would you recommend just grabbing cash from personal account and sticking it on a higher limit table. How did you guys do it when moving limits?? Thanks in advance.

Hi. A lot depends on where you are playing and what games are available. Generally, most folks beleive that middle lijits start at $10-$20, and that is where you start running into good hand readers, tight players, players who pay attention, draw conclusions and act on them.

My experience has been at Party. I have found some 5/10 games to be somewhat tighter than the lower ones and have been able to make plays that would never work on a typical 2/4 table there. There are also some 5/10 games that might as well be .50/1 games, but that is not the rule.

actually I think on the average the players get a little better at each level. So there is something said about moving up level by level.

sad thing is it takes quite a while before your statistically confident you can beat each level. probably around 500 hours online and 1000 in B&M cardroomss or more so it could take you some time to get up there where you feel you want to be.

a sadder thing is that if you play LL B&M's where the house rapes you for multiple big bets an hour in various rakes and rip offs you could be winning money from the players but loseing it all to the house.

in the virtual cardrooms a similar thing happens but its not quite so bad you reach statistical significance faster time wise and the rake is lower percentage wise. but the sturctures may be composed that if you dont play a Looser game you are playing somewhat incorrectly for the games structure. And the anties are draining you at a much faster rate on some sites. (Although this is not the case in games where there is a structured blind Hold em, omaha, etc.)

In addition these fast structures make opponents typical bad play (seeing too many hands and going to far with them) more correct than in a tightly structured game. so variance goes up (g00d) rake per hour average goes up (bad) and the time till you reach statistical confidence in your abilities goes up.

so there must be some middle ground some where .

If you are dead set at playing a lot of online poker and your main concern is taking down some money I suggest you spend a considerable amount of time hawking the different limits. once you find a limit you are very confident you can beat play the next lower limit for around 500 hours then asses your results. And dont be afraid if you lose 200 or 300 big bets, more in stud type games, from time to time.

best of it

find the game your bankroll can afford *and you can win consistantly at* then take shots at higher limits when circumstances dictate *you watch the table and notice similarities to what you can beat*

Rule #1 of Poker
Circumstances alter cases
Rule #2 NEVER forget rule #1
