AKs with board paired?, Williams21, 12. Nov 2003 18:36

Here's one hand that recently came up in a 3/6 and I'm looking for some feedback.

I'm in early position with AKs. I raise, looser player calls, tight-agressive button re-raises, SB calls, I call, loose player calls.

Flop is 2s4c4s. SB bets, I raise, loose player calls, button calls.

Turn is 10h. SB bets, I call (pot is around 75 so I'm getting the odds I believe). Loose player calls, button folds.

River is Ad. SB bets, I call, loose player folds.

SB flips over 45d to win the pot. Did I play this right, or should i have folded right away with the board paired?

Thanks

Williams

I think you played the hand perfectly. When the board is paired, it may affect your decision to draw at a straight or flush, but you need to consider what the pair is. It is far more likely in a pot that went to 3 bets before the flop that someone will have trips if the board comes AAJ or something similar, and with the J it is quite possible you would be drawing dead to a flush (as AJ or JJ are likely holdings in a raised pot). In this case, you got tortured, but I like the way you played it on every street.

I would have capped the flop if I was going to stay in. You might get the loosert player to fold to two more bets. Otherwise, I think you played it fine.
