| Ok, I know everyone is probably getting sick of people asking what books to by but I have a few questions. I've never sat at a real ring game, only home games and free online. I have almost worn the binding off my Lee Jones book, yet I still have trouble beating these games. It seems like every time I get a hand it gets beat on the river when someone makes a gutshot or something. I don't think I'm playing poorly, not greatly, but solidly. I recently bought TOP and HEFAP, and I wonder how useful these books will be at the 2-4 games at my local card club (Canterbury Card Club, please let me know if anyone has played here). Does anyone have any suggestions about the differences between WLLHE and HEFAP's section on loose games? I've probably had 4 winning sessions out of my last 25 times at the table. Am I getting cold cards or do I need to rework my whole game? | ||

| I won't tell you which books to buy but as far as playing the free online games ... understand its free and therefore ppl do not play like they would/should with real money. You will find lots of checking in real money games vs free games. Couple of weeks ago I played with real money (other then penny poker at home) for the first time. I was at the Horseshoe in Vegas and playing at the 2-4 tables was a rush. I played 2 sessions the first one I lost like 5 bucks and the next time won over $60 it was fun, just go try it. I would recommend at least twice the min buy-in like in a 2-4 game go with 40 - 50 bucks. | ||

| First of all I would not show up with $40 to a 2-4 game, $120 is more realistic. I salivate when someone comes to the table undercapitolized. Free online is a different game, you may not need to make any changes to your game. Even the 2-4 game is tough to beat sometimes, lots of callers.. Sklansky's holdem poker book is pretty straight forward and he ranks hands by profitability vs, chances of winning the hand. Just red it yesterday at the book store, I'll implement the concepts on Friday at Foxwoods. -Blazman on 12. | I'm doing pretty good with my Lee Jones book. It's the only one I have now, I'm getting Theory of Poker and Stud book next. I was in your shoes a while back. The mistakes I was making were not betting aggressively enough when I had top pair w/ high kicker or 2 big pair and not check-raising enough. I was getting in too many flops also. The more I started taking charge of hands the more I won. You need to play real money to really learn. I like play money to learn fundamentals of calculating odds and learning new games, but it's just not the same. I have been playing 1/2, 2/4 and Limit SNG on Poker Stars and am about $50 up the last 4 sessions and made the money in an SNG. | ||

| Jake, I play at Canterbury once every two weeks (payday). I play the 2/4 tables. If you want to win at limit you have to stick to the "big card theory", play any two cards ten or better. But you also have to read the board and look for tells and their playing style. My game has improve after reading Super System by Brunson, Hold 'em Excellence by Krieger, and Hold' em Poker for Advance Players by Sklansky | ||

| either the game you're playing in is too tough, or you're simply not following the advice lee jones gives in his book. either way i suggest you find a softer game. | ||
