Stack size checking rule for NL/PL, MaskMan, 11. Nov 2003 12:40

What is the standard rule for players asking the other players stack sizes in NL and PL?

Can someone ask another player at any time how much they have in front of them? Or do they need to be involved in a hand with them? Can anyone share a link to a good set of rules that covers this topic?

We have a player in our game who likes to ask a lot and it's annoying some of the players.

Since I play almost exclusively online, I haven't really confronted that kind of problem, but at a home game, you can of course do it however you like. If it were me, I'd first just explicitly suggest to the guy to not ask quite so often, as it does slow the game down. If that's already been done or doesn't work, I'd say introduce a rule that people can only ask for a count when it's their turn to bet. Depends on just how aggravating it's gotten. It's of course also ashame to spoil the whole "fun among friends" aspect of a home game as well.

It is generally in a B&M casino the job of the dealer to count player stacks (and they do it quite fast), however in my home games, I tend to have players keep track of thier own, and count when asked. Else, you could just have whoever is dealing count the chips.

If anyone in a B&M asked me while neither of us were involved in a hand I'm sure I could think of something nasty to say. Whether or not there's a rule, it's poor etiquette when the person can eyeball it themselves. Once in a hand it's a completely differerent story, ask away.
