flopping 2 pair (or boat), Aisthesis, 11. Nov 2003 10:55

I think we recently had a 2 pair odds calculation here, but I'm rerunning it just as point of information for one more hand that can work for (lowish) suited connectors--and of course also for just any two random cards.
(50)(49)(48)/6 possible flops. Of these, (3)(3)(48) should yield 2 pair or boat. I get around 2% or 1/50.

Cross-referencing Lee's remark on odds vs. chances in the other section, it's interesting that it doesn't make much difference on the lower percentages: at 2% we're talking 1/50 chances vs. 1:49 odds, but as you get up around 10% the difference starts getting more dramatic...

That's true. But in any case, if you don't understand the difference between odds and probabilty you will just keep fouling your computations regularly. They are very simply related concepts. Probablity measures how frequent something happens, ie. 1 time in N. Odds measures what your payoff shoud be if you bet on the thing. If it happens 1 time in N tries, and you bet $1 you should get paid off $(N-1) if you win. ie. If you win you get your $1 back and win an additional $(N-1). Thats odds of (N-1) to 1. Learn it once and be done with it. Then you can move on.
