YOU make the call..., TKarrde, 11. Nov 2003 07:29

Played some poker last night with the guys. Got togehter to watch a horrible NFL game. Where were the Packers?

But anyway... several guys have been playing on UB so we decided to play a Sit and Go. First one I busted out in 3rd place of 6 on the bubble. Then everyone else showed up and we played the 10 player main event. Just like UB. 1000 chips and 5/10 blinds.

After pulling out a miracle with AQs against AK and JT when QQx hit the board I was a huge stack.

Down to 5 players.

I am the SB and call to see the flop with Q9s. BB and UTG are in. BB is an unreadable maniac and UTG likes to see alot of flops. The flop comes AsQdxs.

I think I could have the best hand but am afraid of the Ace. I start playing with my chips and try thinking of how much I need to bet to get the maniac and calling station to fold their hands. If they have an Ace I want them to go over me. And I don't want to put too many chips in the pot if I have to fold. But I have a high pair and the second nut flush draw.

The button, trying to goad me, says "Go all-in!"

I mumble softly while looking down and playing with my chips "Go all in?"

Immediately the BB says "Call. I'm all-in." And someone else says "Let's see them."

I'm stunned and shocked. I argue that I DID NOT CALL ALL-IN. I just repeated what the other guy was saying. There is alot of confusion and I seem to plead my case well enough that no one forces me in.

The very next hand I bust out the BB. Oh yeah... you can bet he was steaming. Still upset over me not going all-in on the previous hand.

The guy was playing out of turn all night and I didn't feel bad. He got what he deserved. And it was just a home game.

But I know that had I been in a live tournament at a casino and the dealer had heard me say "all-in" that he might have thought that was my action and had it stand.

I'm not sure what the rules are on this. But I never made a declaration to the table or even moved my chips in. That much was very obvious.

How would you guys have handled this situation.

Thanks,

TKarrde

P.S. I went on to win the entire thing.

If you did not mean to go all in, I would be very careful with what you say. Verbal commands rule the day, and even if you misspoke, I think that is a trouble comment. As Brunson says, "When I am in a big pot, I don't let anyone engage me in conversation." Focus on your game -- your comment alone may have shown weakness. Better rule of thumb is to stay quiet.

certain words and phrases should be avoided at the table in any context other than the one that happens to describe the action you're taking, among them "all-in," "raise," "check," "I have AA," etc. Just to be safe. It can only lead to problems.

It just happened at the card room I play.

Player A says CHECK
Player B says "Check?" and then Bets
Player A says call the Floorman
Floorman say CHECK, no bet.
River comes up for 3 hearts, Player B wins with a flush
