Vegas poker games, who has the best?, TeKn0wLeD-G, 11. Nov 2003 05:16

i'm heading to Vegas next month for my yearly trip, and while i never really paid attention to the poker tables and poker rooms in previous years, this year i am definitely going to be playing as much as possible. after a long year of poker addiction with many hours under my belt, i'm excited as hell to get out there.

my question is, what are the best places to play LL games, NL games? also, which casino has the best daily or weekly tournaments?

i've tried to look these things up online and i have found some information, but i thought i'd ask for some advice from you guys.

specifically information on the buy-ins and limits, where to play, what type of players to expect etc would be great!

thanks for any help you can provide!

i'm looking for HE obviously, 7 Card Stud, Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo particularly. i'll play any type of poker, those are my favs.

i'm looking for any range of limits under $10/20. i want to warm up on lower limit tables like $1/3 or $2/4, or to kill time between activities. then when i'm looking to play some serioues poker i'll be more interested in $4/8 and up.

I played at the Mirage last weekend and thought it was great. I played 3/6 HE. I was 13th on the waiting list and got on in about 45 min.

The dealers knew what they were doing and the waitresses were always there. No smoking either, they understand the importance of customer service.

I read yopur below post about the game you are looking for. The Mirage had 7 3/6 HE tables as well as at least 3 6/12, a 10/20 and a 20/40. I saw 2 stud and 2 Omaha tables.

It's definitely an HE dominated room.

Depends on what kind of game you are looking for. If you are looking for a highly competitive, highly skilled game, go to the Mirage, then Mandalay Bay or Bellagio. If you're looking for average to below average players, check out Luxor. If you want some tourists, go to Excalibur.

I know Luxor has daily tournaments, and they are different based on what day you play. I entered a Freeze-out Hold 'Em tourney on a Saturday morning. It was a $25 buy in for $250 worth of chips. When you sit down, they offer you an additional $50 in chips for $3. Betting starts at 15/30, and progressively goes up as time goes on to weed people out. It was a pretty good tourney, a healthy mix of novice and intermediate players, and a few very skilled players, so it's not too difficult to advance to the later rounds. I believe the final 7 get prize money. When I was there, there were about 45 players, which is near the limit. Unfortunately for me, I lost when I was betting my 3 jacks with a king kicker. Until this point, I had the nut. Then, on the River, a King was fliped; not what I wanted to see. True, it gave me Jacks over Kings Full House, but it also gave another player Kings over Jacks Full House. Ouch. Talk about a bad beat.

I went to Vegas for Halloween and posted the following trip report upon my return. See the original thread under "looking for a game" if you want more info. Hope this helps!

-------------------

Just got back from a Vegas weekend. Thought I'd post some observations on the board about the various rooms, as there seem to be frequent requests for info on LL poker in Vegas.

Generally, it was a fun trip. Played a ton of poker (all 4/8, 1-4-8, and a little 8/16 HE) and managed to break my recent nasty losing streak, restoring confidence in my game that, frankly, had begun to waver. No spectacular gains or anything, but 5 of 6 winning sessions (some quite small). Those are results I'll take any day.

My overall observation is that Vegas LLHE games are quite loose, with varying degrees of agressiveness. Probably 75% of the 4/8 hands I played reached showdown. Some say that CA is the home of "no fold 'em hold 'em." I say Nevada comes much closer to that description. Here's where I played.

THE BELLAGIO

Hands down, the nicest room I visited. Crowded, but the 4/8 list was never too long (I should add that Halloween weekend isn't peak season, so it's probably busier on many weekends). 4/8 is the lowest limit spread.

Management was very nice...had a long chat with the supervisor about poker room hotel rates ($199 on weekends for 6 hrs play, any limit). I expected the dealers to be "a cut above" what I see in CA, but they weren't. I saw several mistakes made including one total blunder (I've posted that situation under "rules" to get some additional perspective).

The toughest part about the Bellagio games is the mixed crowd they attract. In CA, tables -- as a whole -- usually run loose or tight. At the Bellagio, they'd have half stereotypical older, tight, local players and half super-loose youngsters, who were obviously new to the game and had been "educated" by the WPT (after I bet one hand, a beginning player gave me a 2-minute "stare down" a la WSOP. I busted out laughing (not an act)--he called, I won).

Lost the biggest pot of the trip here, when a novice cold called my preflop 3-bet with Q9s. We had a huge three way pot with a tight local holding QQ vs. my KK and the novice's Q9s. He won with a flush on the river. Ugh!

I've posted another hand from my Bellagio play in "stragegy"...would love some thoughts on whether I played a monster hand too slowly (I think I did).

THE LUXOR

Dumpy room. Bad Players. The Luxor spreads 2/4 HE and 1-4-8 spread limit in its smoke-filled low-ceilinged dungeon of a poker room. I was unprepared for a spread limit game and wish I had spent some more time thinking the differences between fixed and spread limit before sitting down.

With blinds of 1-2 (at a passive table), I figured the appropriate strategic adjustment was to vastly increase the number of drawing hands I'd limp with. If I could see a flop with virtually any two suited or connected cards for $2, it seemed like a good deal. Several pots reached $100, so the implied odds were there.

Also, the spread limits revealed just how bad some of these players were. With a 50-60 pot, they'd frequently make small ($2-3) bets on the turn and river. I can't imagine any rationale for such a play! (unless it's a super-sophistocated trap play, which, trust me, it wasn't.)

Scored a big pot when my flopped set of 6s beat top two pair. That helped compensate for my many missed flush draws.

Pluses about the Luxor? They have generous high-hand and bad-beat jackpots. They rake the pot in .25 cent increments to avoid over-charging. And the players were the worst I encountered. It was criminal I didn't take them for more.

Minuses? Ugliest room I saw. Smoking. Trouble keeping games together (we were regularly short-handed).

MONTE CARLO

A surprisingly nice room that spread 2/4 and 1-4-8 spread limit. They said they usually spread 3/6, but didn't have any going this weekend. They also had a $100 buy-in NL game going...the only NL I saw ANYWHERE. High hand and bad beat jackpots.

Players were better than at the Luxor, but worse the Bellagio.

I didn't visit the Mirage or Mandalay Bay...two rooms I wanted to play in but just ran out of time.

MY RECOMMENDATION: The Bellagio is clearly the "gold standard." But if you're not comfortable at 4/8 (and I suspect higher on really busy weekends), it's not for you. Monte Carlo is the best for really low limit games. And if you can take all the hassles, I suppose the Luxor is worth a shot. But it's definitely worth brushing up on spread limit play before going. I think my lack of familiarity with it cost me a few bucks.

AND ONE MORE THOUGHT. I hate to say it, but if you're from CA, you're not going to be impressed by the size of any of the poker rooms. I'd say Hollywood park is 2-3 times the size of the Bellagio (though not as elegant) and Commerce is even bigger. For some reason, I expected BIG.
