$50-$100 game. ten-handed.

I have ace of diamonds and ace of clubs in the big blind. Early position player calls $50. Player who is one off the button raises to $100. Button calls $100. Small blind folds. I reraise to $150. EP calls additional $100. Last two players call additional $50. Pot is now $625.

Flop is 4d 5d 8s

I bet $50. EP raises to $100. Last two players each call $100. I reraise to $150. EP reraises to $200. Everyone calls. Pot is now $1425.

After turn, board is :4d 5d 8s Qc. I bet $100. EP raises to $200. One off the button folds. Button calls $200. Pot is now $2025. What would you do: Reraise, call, or fold? I will describe what happened after.I receive a response. Thank you.

Sfrancis since you hold the ace of diamonds(I think it is obvious the button has a diamond draw) and you need an ace to win (seems that the early limper is likely to have a set) you are getting 21-1 on your 22-1 shot so a call is in order. A reraise is out of the question and so is a fold at this point. Just my thoughts. GRANT PITTMAN

Does this mean that I should make a crying call on the river if an ace or a diamond does not fall?

Would that early limper play a hand like 8,5 or 5,4 up front that flopped 2 pair....if not than the only card that saves you is an ace....the limper flopped a set or the straight unless he is crazy. GRANT PITTMAN

I made the mistake of folding. Although in terms of expected value, I don't believe folding was a grossly negative play. As it turned out, the river was a total blank. However, the EP player turned over ace-nine of clubs and button turned over jack-queen of diamonds after both checked. So ace-high took down the pot. I think the other player had EP beat too with ace-king or medium pocket pair. The winner didn't make a show about bluffing or anything. He took it down calmly as if he had a set of fives. He played extremely tightly pre-flop and the flop too, rarely ever seeing a turn. He was not a maniac. I was wondering if anyone else has tried this all-out bluff: capping the flop and raising the turn with the worst hand against a field of four.

So if I understand this hand right....the player doing all the raising had A9 of clubs? He flopped no pair and no draw? GRANT PITTMAN

That is correct. It truly boggled my mind. Again, he was neither on tilt nor a losing, loose player. The only way I could see it from his perspective is if he knows that two of us have high poker pairs or ace-kings. Since we know he knows that, his reraises and raises hold extra merit, since it signals he can beat those hands. After one player sticks around through all that, he finally gives up on the river since he knows he will be called anyway, but he wins with ace-high. That's the only way I could reason out the play.

I understood that a queen came on the turn and one player held QJ diamonds? GRANT PITTMAN

Excuse me. I meant that he held jack-ten of diamonds. He had no pair.

I agree with Grant in that you should have called and made a crying call on the river unless a diamond and or a 4th str8 card came. The EP player sure played it like a set or a big over pair (KK maybe), but I am as shocked as Grant that he turned over A9c. With that board though, I just think the pot is too large to fold for one bet on the turn and river...it was 24 BB's to you, right?

I would also keep my eye n that player closely because this play does not at all describe how you think he plays. Perhaps he had a read on you that to too much strength, you would lay down an overpair? Otherwise, it doesn't make any sense (and if I had the bankroll, I would love to play in that game too).

Steve
