Playing NL with a skilled maniac, Mike Kovner, 9. Nov 2003 22:31 | ||

| I play a NL game with about 6 people average - they don't let it get above 8, and it sometimes gets down to 3 when we extend the sessions and play into the night. I consider most of the guys that play slightly worse than me, maybe a couple are just as skilled as me. However, one guy is very skilled on the flop. He sees 95% of the flops, but can read everyone's hand very well, so he beat everyone when the flop comes down. I was wondering how everyone would play against this type of player? Sometimes I'll have middle pair when only he and I see the flop and Ill bet into him, and he comes back raising. I suspect this happens more times than he actually has top or over pair, but I usually remain disciplined and fold so as to not lose a huge pot. I know he's taking money off me, so I usually play disciplined and try to win pots off of the other players for a net gain. Then, once in a while, Ill have the nuts and Ill take a big pot off of him. This usually works until I become undiscplined and think he's bluffing, re-raise him, and lose a huge pot. I would never think to do that, but a lot of times when he buys the pot on the flop he'll show that he had nothing. What would you do? Stay out of hands when he's betting into me, and just make it up by taking money off of the other players? -Kovner | ||

| It sounds as if you think he is a better post flop player than you, and that's nothing to be ashamed about, but you should make adjustments so that you don't lose too much to him. Raise your strong hands high enough preflop to make it unprofitable for him to try to see a flop and outplay you with weak hands. Don't limp as much with weak hands trying to see a flop cheap when he is already in the pot. Do everything you can to get position on him so you can see if he is in the pot before you decide to play. Bet when you're strong, avoid him when you don't have a hand. Bluffing against a player who can read you very well is generally not a winning proposition. Lastly, and most importantly, try to figure out what he is doing to get the best of you every time, and once you do, try to devise a plan to counteract it. It's fine to just avoid the situation for now, but you don't want to do it forever. Lee | ||

| I'm not sure this guy sounds like a maniac. It sounds to me more like he may just be too good for the game. Seeing 95% of flops is maniacal but assume for a moment that he is way better than the rest of you and he knows it; he can afford to see a lot of flops if he knows he can steal many of them. You said yourself that you become undisciplined sometimes and get burned by calling him. It may not be coincidence that he just happens to have the cards on those hands you call. I would say that your best strategy is probably what you said you already do: stay out of his way unless you've got the goods and take money off the rest of the players until you get a read on this guy and can figure out how to beat him. Also, I could be off by a million miles. He may just be a pure maniac in which case all you need to do is tighten up and spank him when you have the nuts. If he really is some kind of post-flop supergenius, though, you're probably best off not tangling with him too much. SpaceAce | ||

If he really sees 95 percent of the flops, or anything close to that, you guys are not raising, or not raising enough, before the flop with your good hands. By playing passively, you give him an opportunity to see the flop on the cheap. Since he plays very well after the flop and obviously reads you well, you ought to do what you can with your good hands to either shut him out of the flop when you have a hand worth playing, or take his odds away by increasing the price he has to pay to see the flop.
