Luck out or Smart Play?, TooHighStr8, 8. Nov 2003 18:00

The following hand occurred online at lower stakes. Did I play it well or luck out? If I lucked out, where was my mistake? It went something like this...
Player in MP (I'll call him Aces) raises pre-flop, all fold to me. I have pocket kings on cutoff position and put him on AA. I figure that even with AA he doesn't have me beat by much so I will try my luck on the flop and see what happens. I raise (not one to call much), the SB calls, Aces reraises to cap the pot with me and SB calling.
The turn brings 6c, 5c, Qc. One of my K is a club so I have a draw to K high flush. Somebody might have the Ac, but might not. SB bets, Aces calls, and I raise, they both call.
The turn card is Ks. The flush is out of my mind and all I can focus on is that I have Aces where I want him. SB bets, Aces calls, I raise, SB reraises, Aces calls, I reraise, they both call.
The river is Qh giving me a full house. SB bets, Aces calls, and I raise. Both call, see my hand and muck their cards and I rake a pot worth 28x the big bet. I print the hand to show my buddy and to my horror (and amusement) see that while Aces did indeed have AA, the SB flopped the A high flush. I begin to feel like I Iucked out but that would imply that I made a mistake along the way. Did I?

Why would you think he has AA just because he raised in MP? The chances are slim (although you were right). Your only mistake is playing KK if you really knew he had AA. If he does have it, you are not just "not beaten by much". You are dominated. You only have 2 outs. Not too mention whatever the other guy has. That being said, you played the hand fine.

You won with a very lucky 5th street (one of 4 cards you needed to beat that flush), I would feel both proud and lucky. If you weren't putting the other guy on a flush (obviously not the guy with aces) you might have been in bad position if you tried to check raise the turn. I think you played this hand perfectly, maximizing your winnings from both of them. I'm also suprised the guy with pocked Aces didn't fold when the flush draw hit the board, he must've believed you both for not having clubs.

You put him on AA from a single pre-flop raise? The only way I can see that is if he is so incredibly tight that his raise always means AA. Either that or you are the most amazing reader, ever.

No matter how you did it, though, if you put him on aces and I mean really _put_ him on them and believed it, it was incredibly foolish to play the hand. AA and KK sound close but you may as well be playing deuces against his aces.

Let me rephrase...I knew that the best thing he could have would be AA so that is what I was looking to top, worst case. With KK on the button I wasn't that bad off, especially if he didn't have AA. Is KK good enough to call a pre-flop raise when you have position? I was ready to bail out if I didn't get a favorable flop.
