How should I approach this tournament?, seti, 7. Nov 2003 11:03 | ||

| There will be a local tournament in my area tommarrow but it's structure is a little different than I am used to. $200 + $10 buy-in aprox. 24 players on 3 tables. They do not move players to keep tables balanced as players fall away. Instead the top 2 from each table converge to a final table and each final table player gets some prize money. Each player at the beginning gets a fresh box of plastic poker chips, and it starts off with an ante. The ante is somewhat small but last time I was there I went on an unbelievable bad hand streak and only picked up 2 winning hands in the 4.5 hours I played and the ante killed me. Also, there is NO blind structure or minimum bet other than the ante. The players there aren't very good and they will call most bets and bluffing wasnt working against them last time, I saw a couple people make huge bluffs just to get called by the low pair. I am very interested to hear how all of you would approach such a loose tourney where most people are in the pot every hand because of the absent blind structure. Thank you very much, I read here every day but do not post often. | ||

| I forgot to say it starts as a limit tournament for the 1st two hours then moves to NL the rest of the time. | ||

| Apparently these players mistook the lyrics of Kenny Rogers's song: "Know when to hold'em, know when to never ++++ing fold'em." All right, all joking aside, if these guys are playing calling station to whatever comes up, the general rule of thumb is to play reasonably tight like I'm sure you do. You say it starts out as limit and goes into NL. That means a lot of people will play pots, chasing to river. Pros tell you this is good to have but that also means that someone could get lucky every hand. Should someone keep getting lucky, they can amass a chip lead quickly. I bet, you though, they won't know why. Antes in hold'em tourney? That is very, very odd to just have antes in the pot. I've played ones where it starts out as blinds and then antes are added but thats crazy otherwise. With regard on how to play people like them, I'd say just play fairly straight with them for there is no point trying to pull off too many advanced plays like bluffing, trapping, etc. I'd also be wary of raising wars. As you get into the NL section, though, make your judgment on using advanced plays. Most likely, you want to keep playing straight if they call like they say you do. That said, good luck and hope you hit the money. | ||

| Thanks, that pretty much what I was thinking but is good to hear it reinforced by others. With the dumb ante and bizzare absence of blinds, there are a majority of hands being seen to the flop by all players at the table. It gets me kind of nervous because any hand could be out there. I think I'll just bet what my hands are worth to me and avoid advanced plays, like you said. Though if i get the nut hand I think I may try some check raises. Your input was appreciated. Thank you. | ||
