Something's fishy, Robert M, 6. Nov 2003 13:26

I have been playing poker online for a while, started with $40 and built it to $150. I have been on the same bankroll for almost a month. The website where I play has very weak players, and since I am somewhat experienced from many years of B&M, I consistently beat out the comp, play the right tables, and stay off tilt. I choose to play shorthanded 4-6 players. Now every time my roll gets close to 200, 1 or 2 peolple sit down at my table with very high bank rolls
> $1000. The yalways bet, and after the flop they raise, reraise and I get stuck in the middle. I have seen their hands at showdown and I can honestly tell you that their cards have nothing to do with it. Now I am sure that people will tell me I should take advantage, but the problem is if I play medium strength hands, I still have to worry about the other callers at the table, not to mention the maniacs. So I leave but it puts a dent in my bankroll everytime. Could it be possible that the online casino is trying to pump up pots for better rakes? Maybe they do it at the lower limits because the higher limit players would be on to this? Does anyone have any insight on this?

It sounds to me as if you are more likely the victim of player collusion than a setup by the online poker room. It could also be pure coincidence, too. I don't think the extra rake generated by having shills pump up pots would be worth the bad reputation and potential loss of customer trust.

That would be the most ridiculous way to "pump up the rake". Since it would actually drive out most people other than the raisers(and the one person w/ a power hand). Online casinos make money by keeping the games flowing smoothly and their customers happy. This is why they offer deposit bonus's, jackpots, frequent player points etc...

I recently had to leave a pokerstars $30 SnG right after entering, when I wrote them an email explaining why, they happily gave credited me $30. Why? Because they knew the money would keep me playing at THEIR site!

Player collusion is a possibility, but to that end both players need to be VERY good to pull that off successfully and proifitably. Anyone that good would not waste their time and the possibility of being caught by playing the small tables. More than likely you're sitting at a table w/ a couple of maniacs. This can be a very profitable situation IF you know how to take advantage of it AND your bankroll can sustain some major fluctuations

I was playing 15-30 one night w/ an absolute maniac. He had turned a $700 stack into $3k at one point on pure luck. Normally I don't play higher than 10/20 but I followed him to that table because of the possible opportunities. Unfortunately he hit his gutshot straight on me 2 or 3 times(against my big PP's of course) and I ended up losing 1k. My mistake was leaving work when my shift was over to go home and finish playing. In the 30 minutes it took me to get home, he ditched his entire 3k+. Looking back I should have just hung out since I knew he was going broke, i just didn't think it would be that quick. The guy was 3 betting the turn w/ nothing but a gut shot draw(how did I not think that would happen). Oh well...

The moral of the story is that in the long run if you know you can take advantage of play like that and you're willing to risk some of your hard earned money, then thats a great situation to be in, otherwise go find a passive table, thats the beauty of online poker - game selection.

That's one hell of a run on sentence!

I can't get to any poker sites except this one from work. Do you have any openings at your place?

Thankyou for the reply. I guess there's still a touch of a conspiracy theorist in me. It must have been coincidence, as it happenned three nights in a row, at the same limit, athe the same table, when my bankroll was at the same level. I know I should beat maniacs for profit, but when there are too many I believe I have a disadvantage. It's like what Mike Caro said in one of his articles. I may have best odds against every player individually when I hold best hand on the flop, but collectively, there's a better chance that one of them will connect if they all shoot for the moon when they all stay in the pot to the end. Once I get my BR to 500, I will play 2-4 and 3-6 and hopefully I can get some better game selections.

You should ignore bankroll. (unless it's at a point where someone could not even bet anymore even if they had a royal flush). I purposely sit at a table and only show the minimum to enter. I feel this gives me a decent advantage against people who might mistakenly over analyze my play based on bankroll. Once I have a string of wins I'll change tables. This also forces me to be more patient.

My philosophy:
1)Don't try to over-analyze everything.
2)Simply be patient and play good hands only.
3)If you have a questionable win, fold and wait for a better one. btw, I play 7 card stud only.
4)Don't think you have some super - knowledge about the other players at your table. you probably don't. For all you know they could be playing a certain way for only some time. You will never really know. Unless you risk a bunch of money trying to figure it out for measly gain, when you yourself have a beatable hand. Even if you do know from watching what they show against other people, I usually get into trouble if I try to bluff or assume someone's bluffing.

Just my humble opinion.
