Two pair, BackStage, 6. Nov 2003 10:23

I haven't been able to find any advice on how to play this hand. I hold 66 on the button and limp in after several callers in front. The flop comes 55K rainbow. So, I have 2 pair, but 1 person bets in front of me and I fold. Is this a mistake? Should you stay in if there is an overcard on the board? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

If you don't have a good read on your opponent (i.e. you know he'll bet into a flop like this with Ace-high) then I tend to follow the saying "set it or forget it" with small pocket pairs--especially if an A, K, or Q shows up on the flop which are major scare cards for a small pair. I might check/call if I know my opponent will bet Ace-high or King-high aggressively and the flop is nothing but rags (assuming no pre-flop aggression), I might even raise to get some info (and possibly a free card on the turn) if it's heads up and I'm last to act, but this situation doesn't come up much. Rarely will you have the odds, implied or otherwise, to even go into check/calling mode.

Your advantage here is that you have position. Depending upon your read of your opponent, you should either fold or raise unless your opponent is a maniac in which case calling is also an option (this is because raising a maniac will rarely get you the clear information or free card you desire).

The problem I have with your hand is that if you opponent hit the flop, he either has trips or Kings. Both beat you soundly. On the other hand, if he's playing overcards or has a pocket pair. You should try to determine which he has and try to determine if he's capable of folding in this situation. If so, respresenting three fives is an option.

Fold if you think he has a trips, a pocket pair bigger than sixs, or Kings and is not capable of folding. Otherwise raise and represent three kings.
