| I've been playing play chips on UB for about 2 months and have racked them up to 1.5 million from my starting 1k by playing tight/agressive and reading a few books. Been thinking about starting to play for real, any comments on whether I can expect some success or is play money just not even close. | ||

| It is kinda fun though. Would you suggest playing some low-limit tables to see how I do, or is that not going to work because of the nature of low-limit players. | ||

| While you may be playing properly in play money, there are many people calling anything until their $1000 is gone and getting another $1000. This will give you exstremely skewed numbers when trying to figure your own skill. The .02 - .04 game is much like play money and would not reflect skill either. I would start by playing .25 to .50 to get a read on your ability. That is the first level that people will occasionally fold. You will not be doing this for the money, but for the experience and learning. Once you can earn $1- $2 an hour consistantly, you can consider moving up. I have introduced many friends to online poker and I tell them that until you make 2BB/ hour for the BB x 100 hours you should not move up. (.50 x 100 = 50 hours, but for 3-6 (6 x 100 = 600 hours). This keeps them at lower levels for many hours and builds the bankroll naturally. Guinnessman | ||

| Thanks for your reply. I would think at the level i'm playing now (1000/2000) even in play money, most of the people have some idea what there doing or they wouldn't have bumped their 1000 free chips up to 100,000 (what most "buy-in" for at these tables) no matter how many times they go back for that inial free 1000. I still run into the maniacs but they don't last very long. I think I may try some low-limit games and see how I do . | ||

| I can't really agree with that. You might see some better players, but it is not hard to get 100,000 in play chips. Sat at a play table once, every hand had 5 people going all in. First hand I won, I was at 13,000. Ten minutes later I had 101,000. Wasn't really playing smart poker, just got the better draws. on 6. Nov 2003 15:41 eyeski wrote: > Thanks for your reply. | Thou i cant agree with seeing better players on the playchip tables, couse the good players are sure to play cash games . No one with decent skill will be playing play chips if they can make money on cash game. Alas the players seen on play chip may not be suckers, but should not be regarded as good, sure they might have understood the theory of pot odds and other basic mecanics, but then again if they are better than avg. they can/should make money on cash games (given the fact that they stay at their limit and hold on to other important rules). | ||

| I would say to go ahead and play a low limit (.5-1 or maybe 1-2 depending on where you play), but only if you can afford to spend (and I do mean SPEND) the money on your initial bankroll. Oh, and don't do like I did when I first started playing real money online and get up $30 in 2 hours at a .5/1 table and expect it to happen that way all the time. You will go broke. That reckless play you make pay off once is one of the most dangerous ways of making you think you are better than you really are, and hence, losing money. | ||

| I think there is "some" value at playing at play chip tables. Use your time there to identify what are the best hands possible when the flop hits. Try to think of the 5 top hands. Do the same for the turn and river. Also bet into the practice of calculating str8s and flushes, on each street. Can can also practice your patience in selecting good starting hands and watching how well they hold up. This is limited but it's good to watch. You can practice YOUR poker skills but any money made or lost is meaningless. As far as deciding what real money tables to play at I personally like the $5 SnGs. You get to see alot of poker with more realistic action than a play chip table. And you have a fixed cost of $5. At .25/.5 ring game, you can go thru $5 surprisingly fast. Or try a low limit ring game. Try each and see which suits your style of play. | ||

| A sit and go is a one table tourney. There are 9 players and you play until you win or are eliminated. Usually the top 3 win money. At pokerstars 1st gets 50%, 2nd gets 30%, 3rd gets 20%. The SNG (sit and go) starts as soon as there are 9 players signed up so you dont have to play at a set schedule like a reg tourney. The NL SNGs fill up in a min or two sometimes less. The Limit SNGs sometimes take 10-20 mins depending on the time of day. | ||

| Play money is definitely NOTthe same as real money. Still, poker is poker, Aces still beat Kings beat Queens, etc. I highly recommend you try the real money games, but at relatively low stakes at first, until you get a little experience under your belt. Most sites will give you a bonus (perhaps 20%) on your first deposit, so try it--you may win some money. Kennycatkiller | ||

| Thanks for all of your help. I tried a .25/.50 ring game yesterday and won $8 in about an hour. Will try some more this afternoon. Even at this level, people are folding a lot more than at the 1000/2000 play chip tables. | ||

| actually your play would probably do pretty well in low-limit online games as there is virtually no difference in play chips and LL poker as far as online is concerned. Ive played poker for awhile but if youve read a few books and can do ok in play chips, and use good discipline, LL should bring rewards ONLINE ateast | ||
