Tells advice - the stare!, jackeboy, 6. Nov 2003 03:18 | ||

| Having read some of Mike Caro's great articles on tells and tried them out with some success (especially the heavy breathing/freezing/smoking tips) in my home game - I was wondering if anyone had any comments on this. There are no B&M's where I live so I play mostly on the net but I play in a cheap home game (a micro-tournament) with friends. I know that playing four-handed is not ideal but all attempts to get more players have failed so far. Anyway I have a goodish read on one of the players (he freezes when he bluffs and puffs like a steam train when he's strong), one of the others is pretty weak generally but the third guy does the thing that confuses me. I'd welcome any opinions on what he might be up to. When he makes a big bet (an all-in or something that might swing the chip-lead) against me he tries to stare me down. He initiates the stare and will keep it up as long as I look. Some specifics... Because the game is four-handed we all have to play a little looser than otherwise which makes just about any hand possible. He is generally a strong player who times his aggression pretty well although he can seriously overbet weak hands and can be drawn into this easily. Of the last half-dozen times he has made this bet and stare I have called him once (the only time I had a hand) and he had trips to beat my top two-pair. Generally, when he's not doing the stare - he's an actor: sighing when he raises, sad voice etc. He mucks every hand that doesn't go to a showdown and will not respond to questions (good for him). This guy is my oldest mate so naturally I want to beat him so badly he cries for his momma but what is he up to? I know it's tough with only one hand to go on but what about that hand: He was broadcasting strength and he was strong - a double bluff. Is it likely that its a double-bluff every time? Most times calling will lose me the game - is there any other way to tell (he doesn't do the stare with the other players). Should I throw a game to get more info? | ||

| You need to find (if possible) a few opportune times where it's inexpensive to see exactly what the heck he's representing, then take the bullet. If you can't build a hand history on the guy, you have no chance of figuring him out. Unfortunately, I think it's going to be tough--I'm guessing he only does this with big raises and huge pots, right? I understand the whole weak is strong/strong is weak thing, but as most pros will tell you it's not an absolute--merely a guideline. I consider myself to be just the opposite by nature. When I have the nuts I have confidence--the confidence to look squarely in the face of my opponent and beg for a call. When I'm weak or bluffing, I fidget and try to avoid eye contact. Maybe this is sophisticated play--maybe it's unsophisticated. I think in my case, I don't bother trying to act because I know most poker players are trained to interpret weak behavior as strong and vice-versa. So for the most part I play it straight up, then throw in a few acting jobs here and there to keep people guessing. Maybe that's what your buddy is doing--playing it straight up? Strong = strong and weak = weak. If you play with him often enough, you'll get your read eventually. | ||

| Be patient. Wait till you luck into a situation where he is betting, and you have the nuts. Then.. DON'T CALL QUICKLY. Wait till he stares you down. See what he does. It's much easier to disect your oppenent when you have the nuts and you know you will win anyway. Then make sure you see what he has after you call, and you have your read on him. | ||
