No Limit End Game Question, Doc Hollywood, 5. Nov 2003 14:14

So I'm fairly new to online poker tourneys, though I've played in a weekly $20 buy-in NL HE house tournament for a long time. I consider myself a novice, but improving player.

Here's my question: last night I'm in 3rd place with 3 remaining in a Paradise Poker $10 buy-in tourney (about 2100 chips, if I recall). I'm the BB and dealt suited Kc-6c. Everyone calls to me, so I check -- nothing wrong with a free flop here, right?

Flop comes 4c-Ks-9c. Now i'm looking at top pair and a flush draw w/ a strong top card. I bet fairly hard (250, I think) and get one raise and one fold. I just call the raise at this point.

Turn is 6d. Now I've got two pair and more outs against what is my opponent's either a pocket pair (which may be a set) or lower flush draw that I think i'm playing against.

At this point, I probably made my mistake in not checking. Instead, I bet hard to try to scare opponent out. He comes over the top and brings me all-in. I call, figuring (a) I'm already in the money, and (b) i can still win this thing and make a big profit on this one hand -- probably winning myself the tourney.

Turns out he had trips with 9-9 in the hole. I need any club, K or 6 (13 outs) to beat him on the river. Didn't pull it : (

Did I play this right? Should I have called? Where were my mistakes? Was it the strong bet on the turn instead of an informational check? Even if he brings me all in at this point, I may still talk myself into calling. Any suggestions?

On a related point, this is one of those circumstances where seeing my opponent would have been VERY helpful. Any suggestions on making the transition from a house game with weak players and a lot of tells, to the world of online HE?

Thanks, all.

That's a HUGE hand, especially shorthanded, I would have taken whatever action I could to get all the chips in the center. It was just unlucky that you ran into the set. I certainly would have bet it all when the second pair hit, with outs to a full house and flush.
