Wild NL Ring Game hand, mroban, 5. Nov 2003 09:53

Gotta tell you, I love playing the $50 NL and $100 NL at UB. In general, I look to attack small pots with good position when I sense weakness and grind my way to profitability. Boring, but effective and my bankroll is growing steadily. But I also look for an occasional shot at a huge pot at a passive table when there is lots of limping preflop.

Last night I had a very loose passive table and there were ample opportunities to limp into the flop with drawing hands and get 4-5 callers. Here is the hand I played (I am fulltiltboogy):

Obviously I was terrified of the flush draw but was pleased to see nobody was trying to draw against those odds. Just two guys who couldn't release 2 pair when they hit the flop hard.

In a limit game, say $1-2, I probably would have smooth called 2 bets on the flop (assuming a bet and maybe a raise) and reraised on the turn. The river would have scared me and I probably would have just called one bet or checked if checked to me fearing a check raise.

This was an example of getting your money in when you have a clear advantage and the odds well in your favor and not having to play the river by getting all the money in on the turn. Yeah, I could have been drawn out on with a K or a 7 on the river (or a straight or a flush if anyone was drawing) but I got my money in when I knew I was clearly ahead and made them pay for drawing.

I like that play alot. Anyone think I was too aggressive there?

When I first read your post, I thought $18 was too agressive. But if I did the math right, there was $12 in the pot when it got to you. So more than a pot sized raise make it very expensive for a flush draw to continue. I think you did the right thing. Even if they fold, you take down a nice pot.

I am surprised to see both call an additional $15. I would have folded if I had their cards. Or a flush draw.
