A lot is mentioned about the sample size of hours to determine if a player is truly profitable (and the poker vetrans repeatedly explain that it is a lot more hours than us newer players would've thought).
I would like to hear some opinions on what would be a large enough number of SNG's to flesh out whether one is profitable or not. I'm certain I haven't played enough to know for sure, but is it in the range of 25-50, 50-100, several hundred, more?

Thanks.

I hear that after 300 sit and goes, you should be within + or - 5% of your expected ROI.

You can actually calculate a degree of certainty for any sample size. For this, you need your mean ROI (R) , the standard deviation (s) of all your SNG results (need to all be same format), and the number (n) of results. A 95% confidence interval (CI) can be computed by dividing s by the sq root of n, then multiplying by 2. What you can then say is, "I am 95% confident that my true ROI is between R+CI and R-CI." The greater n is, the tighter your CI will be.

It's not perfect, because your distribution will not be normal, but it's close enough for poker.
