I've just read Anthony Holden's Big Deal subtitled One year as a professional poker player. Recently I read Jim McManus' new book Positively Fifth Street. These books, particularly Holden's, approach literature and as such dig deeper than mere mechanics, dig into the grit and gristle of the essence of poker and why it is such a metaphor for life. I haven't played in a number of decades but my interest has been rekindled by these and other books.
As a young teenager I found a book of my father's, Herbert O. Yardley's The Education of a Poker Player, and because of the advice there was able to keep gas in my car until my early 20's. Running up against older adult cheats spiked my interest, but now I see through sites like this one how poker has grown. McManus' book put me on to Sklansky/Malmuth and the Wilson software. I have my first game coming up this week (4-8 home). We'll see. I do have a question for the forum...I have a slow rural dialup, will this work with the online games?

I think one of the best poker books i have read is The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky. It covers all basic concepts in poker for many different games.

SEE YOU AT THE TAJ or TROPICANA.

THE TOE or DOE of poker is a great book, small but great.

I'm also on a rural dial-up and rarely have problems. I would suggest that if you see that your connection is dubious, fold everything until you can get it there with some degree of reliability. I have had one or two hands that I lost by getting disconnected at the wrong time.

Surprised no one else has the same answer as me. My own journal. I re-read it frequently to remind me of holes in my game and it helps to show me how far I've come and what problems I've overcome. I enjoyed Andy Bellin's book Poker Nation IMMENSELY. It's not a poker book but for everyone who thought poker could be a LIFE, it offers a lot of insight.
