odds for set over set, Don Hayes, 3. Nov 2003 08:15

I had JJ and flopped J66 for the boat. Needless to say I was pumping up the pot. The pot was huge by the river when a King lands. At the showdown I watched in disbelief as the chips went to the other side of the table Kings over sixs. I figure the odds at least 23.5 to 1 for him to catch a King but I was wondering what the chances are of set over set in any one hand. ( math challenged).
Thanks Don

Maybe I'm showing my own ignorance, but if you have the lesser set, I imagine you only have one out (quads). I suppose the conditions could be right such that you could catch a straight of flush if all the other player has is trips, but that seems very unlikely. If the board pairs anything, you would need quads to win.

You're right for the turn draw, but since he has 2 draw cards left at the flop, he's got slightly better than 1/12 for turn and river together.
Doesn't seem worth it to me to try any kind of "preventive bet" on the flop, so the strategy seems sound: Get it as close to an all-in as possible as quickly as possible, except on the river if you had any indications he might have pocket KK.
Just as an interesting note: Having just re-examined my pocket pair hands, I noted that QQ was my biggest winner--pretty much due to one hand, where my opponent had AA. When QXX flopped, I managed to get an all in and the board didn't show an A.
