My Recent switch to NL, Mike Kovner, 3. Nov 2003 02:07

| Alright - for a while I've mostly played limit games online, and studied the books that focus on limit. Recently, however, I found a NL home game, and decided to go. The first couple of time I was there, I lost all of the buy-in. I knew I was a more educated player, but I didn't have experience in NL. Soooo, I decided to play some $5 NL SNGs on UB. After only a week, i started being very succesful: in the money 3 out of 4 times. This has brought up a couple of issues: 1- The past couple of times I've gone back to the home game - I get way up: 2 or 3 times the buy-in, and then start playing like I have no care for chips. Online, even when I think I have the best of it - I won't risk a huge portion of chips. But, whenever a similar situation happens at this home game - Ill call a huge bet and realize later I shouldn't have risked so many chips. I know this is a discipline problem, and I know its common - is there any way to force myself to not blow my chips when i get ahead? 2- I went back to an online limit game, and it seemed boring. Anyone else have this happen to them? I know, if I want to become a good player online I need to climb the limits, but the used-to-be exciting world of limit poker only has me leaving the tables and joining a NL SNG. Anything I cna do about this, except force myself to play limit games? Thanks, Kovner | ||

(and make sure you always have it, whether you are doing well in the SNG's, or not). But what surprises me, is that, you have more control when playing on-line. I would have thought it would have been the other way around because it is so much easier to just push a button and call, as opposed to literally having to pick your chips and place them in the pot, and, for the fact that noone can see you make those calls and bets when you're at home - > So on the one hand, you really have a big part of the battle won - you just need to focus more (I'm sure) when you're playing in your home game and to not let your buddies distract you in any way - and I know that may be more difficult here because I'm sure it's a fun game as well. > 2- I went back to an online limit game, and it seemed boring. I wouldn't give up limit all-together if I were you though (unless you plan on only playing on-line) because most B&M's, if you do intend to play in them someday, spread mostly all limit poker, with very little if any NL poker, at all. But you shouldn't force yourself to play any form of poker that doesn't interest you, or you won't do well with it. The desire does need to be there - so if you enjoy NL and you can master it (sorta speak)......then see if your bankroll can handle it. In time, either way, I think you'll come to the best decision for yourself. Good luck Mike. 4P- > Thanks, > Kovner

| I play in a no limit home game with a bunch of college kids (I too am one but I have far more experience than those with whom I play against) A common culprit for playing more hands in home games when you have a lot of online experience is simply the pace of play. Getting one hand in a time period you're used to getting three can be too much of a slowdown for those who play alot online. This causes many home game players to play almost any two cards. Another potential problem is that usually you assume the players you play online with are better than those you play in home games with. This affects your decisions on bigger pots. Bluffs that would drive out a knowledgeable player won't phase someone holding 3rd pair weak kicker in some home games. | ||

| Alright - Thanks a lot guys. I wrote the message late last night after coming home from the game. I ended up not sleeping much, but this morning I came to a couple of more conclusions. -4P. I think you're right. Its the atmosphere of having fun with people that causes me to play worse than I usually do. I've been told that I'm a much more talkative person when I have chips in front of me. I think I concentrate on reading hands and size of bets more, when I'm short on chips on ready to make a move. Also - I never would have thought this would be a hole in MY game, but I think ego has something to do with it. Im up a bunch, so I push my stacks around, implying "look at me with my huge bets!" This could be the difference between my online play and live play. Online, there is no embarassment preventing bad play, but there is also no pride causing it. I think I'm gonna take a week or two off from playing the live game (they play a few games a week), focus on my SNGs and concentrate on where I make my good and bad plays. When I go back to the game after my break, I'm gonna focus on good and bad hands, and focus on not blowing huge pots. | ||

| as far as the throwing away the chips, john vorhaus suggests in his book killer poker, that you ask yourself why you play the game. To win, win money, fun, competition, getting lucky....that usually asnwers a large part of that question. And going back to limit holdem. for me i would suggest getting your fix for action and excitemnet with the cheap buy in nl tourneys and gring it out playing mechanical poker with limit ring games. thats my take on what you had to say, good luck and enjoy your poker | ||

| hehe - nope - no drinking or sexy girls. There doesn't seem to be too many distractions, 'cept on Sunday nights we have ESPN on in the background to watch football highlights. I usually don't pay attention 'cept when they show Saints highlights, cuz I don't get to watch Saints games in Texas. Anyways, I'm not gonna blame my undisciplined play on anything outside of the game. I'm pretty sure, I just need to pay attention to the key hands I lose and why I lose them to find out where my undisciplined lay is coming from. | ||
