I think rebuying once with about 1000 pluss and a few pots under my belt will be fine for the "begining of the tourny at round 3. ???????????????/// please help | ||

| Hi You should play fast early and try to get lucky while the action is in the game...That way you can get leverage on your opponent and if you go broke you can rebuy! Roy Cooke on 2. | You'll need to come out of the rebuy period with a bigger stack than you started with, the real tournament begins when the rebuys end. That's why I'd play looser during the rebuy period in hopes of a big win, since you can always rebuy if you lose. If you come out of the break with about what you started with, you'll be in bad shape, and playing super tight won't help you so much since you'll need to get down and dirty with your draws since those will be the hands that take big pots. | MRTELNJ. WRONG. SUPER TIGHT IS WRONG. MIX IT UP EARLY AND GET REBUYS IF NEEDED. AFTER THE REBUY IS OVER THEN YOU MIGHT SLOW FOR A SHORT SHORT TIME, OR ELSE TRY STEALS. LJH | ||

| Hello, I'm going to disagree with some of the other posters on this one. The "loose early" strategy for rebuy events isn't necessarily wrong; however, I often use the "tight early" strategy and have done so successfully. Here's what I do, I take the rebuy the second I go through the blinds. I play super tight postflop during the crazy stages, because it usually takes a big hand to win a pot when everyone is playing all loose. I don't try bluffs or semi-bluffs much in the early rounds, I just plan on having to show down the best hand almost every time. However, this "tight early" strategy does not preclude seeing flops with drawing hands in position like small pairs and suited A's, you will often have great odds to play these hands, and will be paid off handsomely when you hit a set, str8 or flush, and you can afford to take that risk in the early rounds. Here's the deal, in the early rounds, you are trying to make a big hand or get out cheap. You want to win every hand that you make it past the flop and turn to showdown. The ideal is to chip up during the early rounds, only having taken 1 rebuy and 1 add-on, if there is one. Then you start the later rounds with a decent sized stack, and you've put less money into the prize pool than many players, some of whom will take many rebuys playing loose strategy. That is your overlay. You put in 3 buy-ins and you will have as many chips as some people who have 4 to 6 times the buy-in invested. Sometimes if you hit a few big hands and win some monster pots early, you don't even need to take the add-on. Another benefit is that you've established a "tight" image which you will use to your advantage when the blinds start getting ugly. This is when you push small edges hard, raising and reraising, and try to win every hand you play. When you play tight early, it makes it hard for people to call you later when you are pounding them. If they have something marginal, they will fold against you since they've only seen you showdown good hands. Most players at this phase of the tournament are slowing down, so you start raising liberally when you think you can get the pot heads up or three way with position. Position and Aggression are key later in the tournament. People will avoid playing pots with you on marginal holdings if they know it's going to cost them a lot. Also, when you start raising a lot, people are less likely to try to take away your blinds. The best defense is a good offense later in the tourney, your aggression builds a force field around you, the good players want easier pickings. | ||

| BTW second paragraph of the above does not apply when you get moved or your table gets broken, but in rebuy events, this usually doesn't happen for a while, as almost nobody leaves the first 5 or 6 rounds. Also, keep in mind that the "tight early" works better with longer rounds and slower blind structure. If you only have ten minute rounds and the blinds go up fast, it might not be right to play this way. | ||
