Heads up, did I mess up?, Ian J, 1. Nov 2003 12:30 | ||

| Today I had a wonderful morning at a .5/1 game, making $35 and so I decided to venture in to my first $20 NL SnG. I was a little nervous, but managed to get to heads up w/ about T3000 to my opponent's T7000. About 5 hands in, w/blinds at 100/200 and a stack of 3500, I get AKo in the SB. My intent here was to win a large pot to catch my opponent in chips, so I decided to raise to only 400, he called. The flop of Kd, 6s, 4s looks wonderful. He bets 200 and I flat call. The turn brings the somewhat ugly 8s (I have no spades), he bets 600 and I move all in for about 2700. He calls and flips over As 8h. 3s on the river and I'm done with. I got my money in with the best of it and a chance to take a commanding lead, but should I have avoided the situation by A) raising more pre-flop, or B) raising a bunch on the flop. Thanks for any comments. Also, what is everyone's general strategy when getting heads-up in a SnG with about 1/3 or 1/4 of the chips that your opponent has. | ||

| I think you waited too long to pop him when there was a dangerous flush draw on the flop. Top pair, top kicker is a great hand heads up, but still not a slowplaying one. Nothing wrong with the small raise pre-flop, but I would have raised him on the flop, possibly all in. Eli on 1. | You got him all in with him with only a 24% chance of winning, which is about as good of a situation as could be expected to double up with. Sometimes it will backfire but more often it won't, those are just the chances you take. | ||
