| When considering 3 cards, it is more likely that you will get a 3 flush than a 3 straight. Of those times when you do get one of these hands, you have more outs to improve your 3 flush to a 4 flush than you do your 3 straight to a 4 straight. Once you do make a 4 card hand, you will have more outs to make a full flush than a full straight. So who can tell me why a flush is ranked higher than a straight, even though by this logic, it seems as though a flush is easier to make? What is the flaw in the thinking? I'll post my thoughts after some discussion. Lee | ||

| Lee - How is it easier to make a four flush than a four card straight? With a 3 flush, you must hit a flush card, which is one out of the ten remaining cards. With a 3 straight, you have sixteen possible cards in which would give you a 4 card straight draw. You start with 5-6-7. You have 4 threes, 4 fours, 4 eights, or 4 nines to complete it to a four card straight. It's "catching" the four flush which is signifigantly harder than catching a four card straight. Now of course if this was 3 card poker, you would be correct in that a three card straight would definitely be harder to get dealt than a three flush because you would have to be dealt three consecutive straight cards (like 5-6-7, or 2-3-4), while that wouldn't apply to the flush hand. But you don't need to be dealt a consecutive straight hand in which to complete to one with more cards to come. 4P- | ||

| My guess is that flushes are overvalued in Holdem. I believe its easier to make a straight with JT than a flush with AXs. Just a guess, I'm not sure... | ||

| u can make 4 str.'s with J10, right? and all of them are the nuts. but most winning hands are just a pair, good kicker, so AK Q etc have more value because of that methinks. but i would rather have J10s than A suited below 10. | ||

| It's because there are more possible straights than flushes. Not sure if these numbers are correct but i think you get: (13C5)x4=5148 flushes. (4exp5)x10=10240 straights. | ||

| I'm sure I once read somewhere that originally the straight was ranked higher than the flush. | ||

| Im no math expert, but it seems that you are calculating odds based on after the flop, however it is much easier to get dealt any 2 to a straight pre-flop then to get dealt two suited cards. | ||

| I have never been on this site till now but I'm still going to reply to your question even though it's a few days later. Its a good question and created a lot of replys. If I'm understanding the question right, your talking about holdem but wondering why a flush is ranked higher than a straight despite the fact that an open ended straight has 8 outs where as a four flush has 9 outs. There reason why is because the rankings are based on five card poker hands, but holdem is in fact a seven card game( 2 hole cards and 5 community cards). If you were just dealt five cards you are more likely to get a straight than a flush, hence the ranking. | ||
