| My name is Justin and I'm 21 years old and live in Bartlett, TN (right outside Memphis) about an hour away from Tunica. Anyway was thinking about playing poker as my career, I have been playing 4/8 holdem for a little while now at the casinos and somedays I win somedays I lose, but I am still ahead as far as money I started out with. Does it just take a little while to build up your "poker bankroll" or should a good player get it rather quickly? What tips would u give a person that is trying to become a pro? thanks a lot for your time. -Justin Hi Justin Learning to play poker on a professional level is a long tough grind. You may be able to beat 4-8 now, but if you want to make poker a career you need to be able to beat at leaast 15-30. Understand as you get older that you must provide your own retirement and heath benifits. Most people that attempt to make poker a career fail. At your age you should make sure you have something to fall back on. That said, you should study the game and give yourself a few years of HARD effort. Read all the books, take the game seriously, like your life depends on it (It does). As far as bankroll goes, it sounds liek you are expecting too much too quickly. It took me several years of life devoting effort to learn to beat the 10-20 to 50-100 games in Vegas 20 years ago....the quality of competition is much tougher these days. Take it slowly...If you have what it takes you will make it. increasing your propensity to succeed is more import ant than getting there quickly. Keep your head on straight, take care of your mind and body, treat the game like Tiger Woods treats his golf game. Best of Luck :-) Roy Cooke | ||

| Justin, you should also seriously consider getting a mentor. You will find that discussing your play and strategy with a successful player can help keep you on track. LGPG, Babe | ||

| I would also remind you that one of Howard Lederer's interviews revealed that he lost in low limits his first 2 years. | ||
