playing with three maniacs, Don Hayes, 30. Oct 2003 12:12 | ||

| I was in a 1/2 game last night where I had been up about 85 for the day and taken a break and came back later that night and went to the well one to many times. The game started out good but then three maniacs got in one on my right one on my left and one across the table. It was impossible to put any of them on a hand raising with J3o, any two cards of the same suit and random junk. At least when they called one bet you know they had to have real trash but I was afraid to call with drawing hands that I would normally like to get into with one or two bets. I thought the best strategy was to really tighten up and I would get unlimited action with big hands. Using that strategy I had AA,KK, J10s, and QQ beaten and gave up when I was down about $40. It was impossible to thin the field and I guess next time I will just haul ass while the getting is good. So the question is what is a good startegy or run away screaming has the best EV? | ||

| Personally I would leave the table. I hate games like that. I end up losing my blinds folding hand after hand waiting for KK or AA. Just a really boring way to play if you ask me. I like a table with one maniac. Thats fun. You can isolate him if he is on your right with reraises or just check and call him if he is on your left. Those tables can be highly profitable (especially if the rest of the table is kinda tight). But three maniacs is a problem. You always know the re-raise is coming behind you and as you said, they could have anything and everything. Also, I tend to put them on the worst hands possible and you know what - sometimes maniacs have good hands. It happens. I think of it like this - with one maniac, you are selectively playing hands and he is playing 90%. He only has one gear really, so when he calls (rather than raises) its an easy read - he has nothing. He will raise when he catches anything on a flop - an inside straight draw, low pair no kicker, whatever. So when you actually have a hand and you are playing 25% or so and he is playing 90% of his hands, chances are you have the better hand since he plays almost everything. So when you actually have a hand like top pair, top kicker you can reraise him with confidence. With three maniacs, it is far more likely one of these maniacs has a decent hand even though they also play everything. Table essentially becomes a lottery every time you enter a hand with these nuts. If you do play it, you should never raise. Just call and let them do the work for you. When you catch a big one, you will win a huge pot. But you are going to pay a lot to see the flop so you cannot play drawing hands at all. I would limit my game to AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AKs, AKo, TT, AQs, and maybe AJs, KQs, 99 and 88 in late position or in the blinds. Actually thats not an awful way to play in a typical game, but in loose passive games I play all kinds of small pairs and mid suited connectors and one-gappers. I wouldn't play those hands in a game like this, way too expensive to see the flops when you are usually a big dog going in. | ||

| I don't mind table with multiple maniacs. I play more drawing hands but only draw to nut type hands after the flop. Hitting one or two of these hands can mean a big profit. Mark | ||

| Sklansky has a section about this in HEPFAP. Basically, play AA, KK, QQ, JJ, and AK. Sometimes play TT and AQ. It's boring, but it will get the money in the long run. He notes that big mistake is playing something like 88. Even though you know you probably have the best hand, if you know they will put multiple bets in on the flop, you can never tell if your hand will be good unless you hit a set, and it is very expensive to find out.
