how many people have gone down 300 BB's, Don Hayes, 30. Oct 2003 12:05

I have read that your poker bankroll should be 300 BB's X limit your playing. I am up 350.00 playing 50/1 and lately 1/2 and some juicy 2/4. I was wondering how many people on UPF have taken a run of bad cards that had them down 300 BB's. I have had runs where I have been down apx 100BB's but have came back, of course I only have a few hundred hours logged in. Thanks for the info in advance.

I have and it happened surprisingly quickly. The problem wasn't bad cards that is easy I got good to great cards that wound up getting beat for about 2 weeks straight.

Thats a good point, you usually won't get your ass handed to you with bad cards, it's when you always end up with the second best hand that you're really in trouble.

This is why I LIKE hands like 23o, 72o etc.., I'm not going to lose anything more than a blind to them. It's the good hands getting cracked that kill you.

I've been playing full time at PP for the last 4 months and have had 3 downward slides on the order of 200 BB's. This was in the midst of an overall uptrend of over 600 BB's. You definitely must be prepared to suffer some bad slides while you are working your way into the long run.

it depends on your variance and win rate. if your win rate is 1bb per hour and your sigma is 12bb per hour then 332bb bankroll will give you a 99% chance of staying in the game. to increase your chance even more just move down a limit if you lose half your bankroll.

Hi

I have played almost 60,000 hours of poker in my life and have NEVER been down 200 big bets. I do play a fairly consistent style. That said, I feel the times I went on a downswing close to 200 bets that I was not playing my "A" game.

If you go down 200...I think you need to take a close look at how you are playing!

Life is Good :-)

Roy's correct. If you find yourself swinging down 200 bets or so, then your edge is probably not as great as you'd like to believe, whether it's because you're not playing your A game or your opponents are better than you think.
That said, I think this reasonable maximum downward deviation (as I call it) varies tremendously depending on the size of the game. The bigger you play, the greater will be the standard deviation relative to your expectation. That's because your opponents will be better and even the bad players will play more aggressively.
As a general rule of thumb, I would say 200 big bets should be about the most you should slide down if you play 30/60 and below and you are a significant winner. If you're playing 300/600 stud however, then a 300 bet slide isn't out of the ordinary.
