California Cardrooms question, Para13, 30. Oct 2003 09:24

Hello Players. I live in California but I play mostly in either Reno or online, usually at Planet Poker. I've only talked to very few players about this(a couple), but based on what I've learned about the different blind/button/rake structure in CA cardrooms, it's always striked me as a bad proposition to play in them generally. What I'd like to know is whether or not a lot of people have similar feelings about this, and also if the structure that I refer to is universal in CA? If it's not, then where is it not? I've only had references for Sacramento and San Jose, by the way.

The single most offensive thing is this Dealer Button, pay the house blind. It means to me that a player gets hit three times instead of twice or sometimes once for sitting out crap cards. It seems that staying ahead(or even) in such a game would be MUCH more difficult.

On line poker means I don't have to put up with it, for those times, as in winter when going to Nevada is more complicated.

Happy times,
Derek

There's no question that it costs players a lot more to play in CA than in Nevada or online (dealer tips are just as costly as the higher rakes!)

I hate the "3 blind" structure also, but at least where I play, the button blind funds the bad beat jackpot, so at least theoretically, players get that money back--though I've never seen a dime of it!

All that said, I still like playing at B&M casinos in CA. It's so much easier to get a read on players in person. Also (and I think this is a minority viewpoint), I've found that online players often better (or at least, less predictable) than B&M players.

What I've never seen discussed is the strategic impact of the $1 live button blind in CA. IMO, this makes virtually any hand (save for total junk) playable from the button in 3/6 or 4/8.

that reminds me, in january on my birthday i sat next the the winning bad beat table...twice in 4 hours. first one was 80grand second was 50grand. it was funny. sorta
i love the badbeat jackpots. it attracts SO many bad, dumb gambler types.

actually i think i have seen just about every possible thing you can see in CA clubs regarding posting and blinds *that make any sort of logical sense*

lets use 3-6 as an example
have seen all these
dealer pays the rake
dealer pays the rake and its live *only one of these 2 i think is even remotely fair*
BB pays the rake and the pot starts with only $1 in it, although BB is still live
pot pays the rake, dealer takes the money from the pot at the end and drops it on next hand *in case a no flop no drop happens*

Sounds like mostly a lot of nonsense.

Well, in Sacramento, the big casino here(Capital), seems to pull the Dealer button pays $3 (in $3/6) baloney, so it's like a no brainer to skip it. It just seems like a bad deal to me. Reno is so much better.--DJ

At the Oaks cardroom in Oakland California, all players pay a couple of bucks every thirty minutes. No rake or extra blind.
