Quad Deuces- what's my river play?, PokerBabe (aka), 30. Oct 2003 07:35

| Mirage 20-40 game. Babe limps early with K,Q clubs and picks up one (unknown and drinking) caller. Bb checks his option and we see the flop of K , 2 2 Bb checks. I bet and 3 bet to drinking guy's raise. Turn is 2 Babe repeats flop sequence. River is 2 Rather unusual card. What's my play? | ||

| You can't bet here, because anyone will call you and play the board OR worse, will have an Ace in their hand and you lose. I think you check an depending on where the bet comes from you probably call and maybe fold. | ||

| Either check or call, depending on what he does. You're heads up with a drunk, the pot is large, and at best you can hope for a chop. A bet is way out of line as I doubt he would fold. Lee | ||

| When I first read this I thought check calling was the only option, due to the chance you might have to call another bet to get shown an Ace at the showdown. But due to the size of the pot and the fact all you can win is half the pot if the hand is checked down I feel there is an argument for going ahead and leading at the pot. True, if your opponent has an Ace you will very well lose 2 bets instead of 1 in this situation, but by risking 1 extra BB you stand to possibly win 10+ BB. After all, your opponent was representing a 2 which he didn't have or Ks which he may have, but unless he held AA or AK (no raise preflop unlikely holdings) he has to feel like he holds a loser at this point which he may or may not fold; but I feel the pot odds warrant taking a shot at winning the whole pot. I may be way off because I actually started this post saying check calling was the only option then changed my mind. Will | ||

| WilliamS Of a bet to have any value, the opponent would have to be able to fold this hand. Even though he is drunk, it would be a very bad play on anyone's part to fold. Either the pot gets split, and your bet has no value, or you get beaten by an ace, and you lose an extra bet. I think the possibility of him having and ace is much bigger than the possibility of him folding, unless he is a very stupid drunk. Mark | ||

| Like I said in my first post my initial thought was to check call, but if I was in this situation and I had ANY inclination my opponent didn't hold an Ace I would bet. My reasoning is your bet has very little risk for quite a bit of reward. True, the drunk probably won't fold, but unless he has an ace you don't stand to lose anything by making the play because you'll get your money back if he calls. If he does have an ace you will lose 1 extra bet than you would if you check call. (ck calling lose 1 bet vs betting out, calling raise 2 bets=1 extra bet) So, you are getting over 10:1 taking the lead and betting with the added insurance of not actually losing anything if he calls your bet. I realize this is not a conservative play and I think it would depend a lot on your opponent, but there is a good chance this guy was in there with KQ, KJ, K10 or even a PP and he may fancy himself a "player" who can make a "good" laydown. Isn't poker about giving players an opportunity to make mistakes? Part of my take here, is playing devil's advocate and trying to look at the problem in unconventional ways. And I certainly won't fault anyone for check calling in this situation, but I feel there can be an argument made for betting out in this situation. Will | ||

| There is one thing here about this particular situation and that is, this player was drinking (although he does not have to be drunk!....) and, he was an "unknown" player. Now I understand the reasons behind checking and calling in this spot, but only an Ace would have you beat here, but at the very worst it's a split pot. I think there would be times that I would bet the river as well. If I got raised I would still call -it's only costing me one more bet to do so, (and that wouldn't necessarily mean that you were beat either), but by being the aggresor, he may not necessarily know (or understand) that all he needed to do here was to play the board, or, he also may misread 'you' for having an Ace. I'd rather give him the opportunity to fold. Although, if I knew the player better, I may chose to check. But I wouldn't always chose to eliminate from betting out in this spot. 4P- | ||

| I did in fact bet the river here for reasons 4Poker noted. I was raised and I called to see K,Q off for a split pot. I think this play is counterintuitive and is probably underutilized. Thanks to all for the comments. LGPG, Babe | ||

By definition, the very best you can hope for is a split pot. It seems extraordinarly unlikely that someone would fold such a huge pot to a single river bet/bluff. If you're bet into, you're probably beat...but I think it's worth a crying call. Especially against a drunk.

| Check-call. Your bet wouln't even get pocket threes to fold here. Sure he probably has a king or maybe a set and probably does not have an ace (AK usually raises preflop, but not every one raises AK preflop), but you are very optimistic if you think someone will fold often enough to make a bet profitable, and I don't think you can accurately estimate this on the fly. Will you call a raise on the river? Even drunks rarely fold to quads on the board, King kicker. So I'd check call. | ||
