| Only 44 entered, 5 paid out. I made it into the money and took 4th. Yeah! But here was a hand at the final table that made me wonder if I was too tight. This was before the 6th place was eliiminated and everyone was afraid of being 6th, so we were all tight. Here's the situation. I'll edit the HH from UB... bb65 is at seat 0 with 4305. airman111 is at seat 1 with 5305. revlovejoy is at seat 2 with 4420. pumpuup is at seat 3 with 2545. emcee21 is at seat 5 with 2815. Larkin is at seat 8 with 24610. The button is at seat 2. revlovejoy: 2s As 8h 4s One caller ahead of me, I call, SB calls, BB checks. Flop (board: 6s 5h Ah): pumpuup checks. emcee21 bets 400. airman111 calls. revlovejoy calls. pumpuup folds. Why did I call? Well, Ace on the board, 2 4 looks good for low.... Turn (board: 6s 5h Ah Qh): emcee21 bets 800. airman111 raises to 1600. revlovejoy folds. emcee21 calls. I'm only hoping to make the low, assuming the high is moot. Had there been only one bet to call, I would have called. But with a raise, I have to be scared of 23. River (board: 6s 5h Ah Qh Ac): emcee21 goes all-in for 415. airman111 calls. Tournament all-in showdown -- players show: airman111 shows Ks Js Kh Jh. emcee21 shows 3c 8d 5c 5s. airman111 has Kh Jh 5h Ah Qh: flush, ace high. emcee21 has 5c 5s 5h Ah Ac: full house, fives full of aces. So the raiser got beat on the river for the high and the winner had a low hand, but not as good as mine. So, had I stayed in, my chip stack would have had quite a boost. I had a low hand, a good one, but not the absolute nuts. The raise freaked me out. I'm new to this game, and I keep hearing - nuts nuts nuts - they almost always take it. Be in love with the flop or let go. With an ace on board, and low cards, is a 2 4 something to really bet hard? I can always assume there's an A2 out there, but a 2 3? Looking back, I think I was too timid. Maybe I should have even raised the flop with that low hand. Had this hand come up once we were down to 5, I would have called the 2 bets no problem - I fight hard once I'm safely paid. Any Omaha hi-lo lovers out there who think it was a good fold? Or was I too tight? Was I a fool for getting in on that hand in the first place? At that point, if the chip leader didn't raise it up, you could get an unraised flop 80% of the time. | ||

| I play some omaha/8 once in a while and have a pretty good feel for the game. Sorry for the mini novel ahead of time. I think you played it right for the most part. Basically it is a game where you play the nuts. The problem, though, is that most Omaha players have a hard time adjusting to shorthanded play. I still try to just play strong hands, like 2 or 3rd nuts with 6 left, but your situation is different. For one, it is bubble time. Either you are doing the betting or holding the nuts. It is a lot easier to bluff people off of hands in shorthanded omaha, but still you must have some sort of draw to do this. Especially since people will still have the nuts ever once in a while. Anyway, back to your hand. Playing your hand the way you did was justified. Playing the hand at that point is very justified. It is a strong O8 hand. Actually at this point, you probably could of raised pre-flop and won the pot right there. Omaha players generally have a harder time with a lot of aggression, then holdem. Your call on the flop was justified, only a 2-3 would beat you for low and you had a good straight draw if a 3 or 7 came, but there was a flush possibility. When the turn came, it was obvious that one of them was betting the flush, so you lost your straight draws. Calling with the second nut with two players doing heavy betting is generally a bad situation. It is even possible someone had a flush or trips with a 2-3 or 2-4, which would of quartered you. I've seen it too many times. Just going for low in O8 is one of the major downfalls of most players, its just too easy to be counterfeited or beaten with the second nuts. So the laydown was a good one. Also, it is always good to see other people go at each other in a tournament. The more that you can stay out of there way the better, because each time that moves you one more seat up in the tourney. So you had a good hand and would of won a lot, but it was a good laydown for the time. Good luck and enjoy the wondrously frustrating swings of O8! ICIP | ||

| Thanks for the input ICIP. I guess Omaha8 isn't nearly as popular as Hold Em, and that's fine with me. I think that what you said about going for the low only being a major drawback of Omaha players is dead on. When I'm in the BB or get in with a good looking hand that misses, but I am drawing to the nut low, I have been folding a lot. If someone bets ahead of me, I look at the pot, split it in half and say "do I really want to risk 300 on this hand for 200 of the pot? Because even if I hit, I will likely end up heads up and all bets then become moot. I think my biggest error realization was when I was re-re-raising in a SNG when the betting pattern suggested 2 or 3 of us were on the same nut low. All we did was continue to cut our share as we beefed up the 1/2 pot for the one betting high. Thanks for the re-assurance. I guess that kind of tight play is what got me into the $$ anyway, can't knock it now! | ||
