| I was playing a moderately tight $50 NL table (non-tourney, 9 players) earlier this evening when I got pocket 77 in late position with a few limps already in. Normally I would probably fold this hand (99 is usually my cut-off), but I tried an idea that actually worked, and I would be interested to hear whether people here think this is something worth trying once in a while, or whether it should be scrapped. Blinds are .25/.50 and a few people have been raising to about $2.50 once in a while--no one quite often enough to make me really sure what they were raising on, but the result was generally that very few people stayed in the game. So, anyhow, I raised to $2.50 and everybody folds except one guy. Flop is something like T62. So, i bet pot and and won a fairly decent pot off it (something like $7). My thinking was this: In a heads-up, my 77 actually turns into a pretty decent hand. In late position I get at least some feedback on what my opponent has before I bet. And if I can get all but one player out, if the flop doesn't show more than one high card, I have a pretty good shot of winning the hand. I also did the same thing again on TT (which I normally don't raise), with pretty much the same results. When I finally got KK (which I normally would only raise by 1 BB but here raised by 4), I did it yet again (although that's becoming a somewhat different scenario), but everyone folded to that, so I probably could've won more with a smaller raise (but of course also risked losing to AA or something). Anyhow, I'd be interested to hear what people here think of this ploy. I don't think I'd have the guts to do it on anything less than 66, and LP certainly makes it more attractive. Also critical is figuring out what size pre-flop bet is just right to "normally" leave only 1 player in the game. | ||

| No amount is "just right" to leave one player. You can make a logical guess, but with players limping in, its hard to say who is gonna limp in for another 2 bucks. I think 2-3 is a perfect raise, you played this exactly how I would in LP. You hit the nail on the head though, only in LP with limpers can you pull this off. If everyone folds, who cares...collecting 1.50 is better than losing 3 bucks or more if you stayed in to river and overcards or a draw gets you. With T's i would polay the exact same way, maybe here raise $3 preflop. KK is another story. $4 seems like a reasonable call, but not after you had already pulled this 2 times and won the pot. I wouldnt show too much excitement by betting 4. Again, I would throw down 2.50 or $3 here and hope to catch at least one caller, then go big on the flop if no Ace hits and hope to make someone pay for a draw. Again, if they fold here, better off you are. Little money is better than leaving people in to river out on you. Good Luck | ||

| That's very re-assuring. Thx! Tried the same thing again successfully today at an easier $25 NL table ... still to early to tell, but if I can turn 66 to 88 into money winners rather than just 0 return (by always folding), I'll be very happy. I'm rather thinking as one goes below 99, really only to do it in LP and to try not to overdo it in any case. | ||
