Online Poker Using a PDA?, Bart Mann, 29. Oct 2003 12:29 | ||

| Do any of the UPF endorsed (unofficially, of course) online poker sites have PDA compatibility? Is there anyone out there who has played or is currently playing online poker with a hand-held device? I currently have a laptop and a wireless router/modem—which is great—but I thought it might be interesting to add a wireless modem to my PocketPC and use that for playing poker so I don’t tie up the computer all night. Anyone know if this is possible? Comments and insights are appreciated as always . . . - Bart - | ||

| It is possible, if you have pocket PC with a wireless connection, there would be no way to stop it. Many people will dial in with a PDA through there Cell phone. It's not the fastest connection but if you are staying in one place, it will be dial-up speed which is plenty for playing poker. I am taking my PDA out with me next weekend so I can play in my tree stand while I hunt for a nice 10 point in Georgia! | ||

| I'll be OK on the connection speed--I'll just run it through my wireless router and cable modem at home (no plans to take the poker show on the road via cell). I do have two followup questions, if I may: 1) What poker site do you use? 2) Are there any issues with the interface? Is it clear? Is everything big enough? Is it easy to navigate? Thanks again. - Bart - | ||

| I'm fascinated by this idea as well. I have a Sony Clie and would be seriously an addict if I could play on it, especially if I could go wireless at home. Of course, I would need someone to explain the setup to me in terms a 4 year old would understand, because I am sofa king we todd it when it comes to this stuff. -Hokie95 "You have a 1:51 chance of being dealt the A of spades as your first hole card. | I am in the process of getting it set up on my PDA as well. It is funny that this post came up because I just got my PDA and had plans to do this. As far as clarity and all that goes, well it just depends on the PDA and your browser that you are using. I know it can be done though, if your PDA handles the color and the resolution, and you are able to browse the internet, and have the little hard drive space that it takes to install a program such as (PartyPoker) which is where i play, then there would be no reason why this wouldn't work. | ||

| Tell you what, everyone--I'm going to write UB.com and ask them if they have members who do it, and if they forsee any issues. I'll post the answer here when I hear something. And for WilliamS . . . setting up your own wireless network at home is pretty easy, with one caveat--you have to have broadband cable service first. Wireless protocols will NOT work with DSL. I learned that one the hard way. I bought $300 worth of wireless hardware, then signed up for high-speed DSL from Microsoft. 14 hours and 6 tech support calls later, someone from Tech Support finally admits to me that DSL service is not wireless compatible. Needless to say I had the cable guy out the very next day. So the lesson here is, if you want wireless--get a CABLE MODEM. | ||

| make sure that you have an external modem that is ethernet whether you go the cable or dsl route, as opposed to a pci card or usb modem. even with the usb or internal card modem can be made to work... but it becomes a little more tricky, involves much cursing, and you will have to at least somewhat understand how to turn the computer into a router for the rest of the house. or have windows professional or some software that does it for you, and the machine will have to be on to use the network. I remember the option in 2000 professional last time i had to look at it. i'm not a genius, but slightly computer gifted and haven't had much trouble with either dsl or cable modem and a router wireless or ethernet. oh... if you have one of the difficult kinds of modem, call them and ask for the ethernet, if they say no, tell them you are going to switch and it usually fixes any problems. you either get to switch or they send you what you need :) Peace, R.Dale | ||
