I've studied acting for several years and one of the big problems new actors tend to have is planning their actions out beforehand. When an actor plans his movements before he gets on the stage he no longer is acting as part of the scene, he can't react to what the other actors do. He becomes stiff and has the potential to freeze-up which, of course, would be disastrous.

Last night I discovered that sometimes I have the same problem at the poker table. I was in a SnG and it was down to 3, top 2 paid. When I was confident I had a read on how the other 2 were playing I decided to make a move, and here's where I went wrong.

My instinct to change gears was correct, I was the shorter of the 3 stacks and I needed to put the other 2 on their heels so I could be sure to cruise into the top 2, but I did it all wrong. I planned my move and when the next playable hand came I made it.

Based on my read I knew that the other player would call a somewhat strong bet preflop and fold to an all-in on the flop if she didn't have a very strong hand. I pulled it once or twice and I was slowly building my stack, but I became so set on what I was going to do, before the cards were even dealt, that I lost sight of what my opponent was doing.

She was playing weaker than normal this hand which is strange because she had been aggressive up front with everything she played so far. I wrote it off as a marginal call on her part. Sure enough she was sucking me in. I was so in love with my plan and my general read that I bet the hand for her, and lucky for her I caught a piece of the flop. And she caught a bigger piece with her pocket A's. A little rusty she burst my bubble and I'm sent to bed shaking my head at myself.

In poker, just as much as in acting, being a part of the whole scene is important for success. Whether it's planning a move, a gear-change or even just what cards to play pre-flop in what position, making a plan ahead of time can be disastrous.

Interesting analogy (fellow actor here). Poker is improvisation - you have your basic rules/structure - but, like improv, if you try to steer the hand in the direction you want it to go without paying attention and changing gears when you're given new information, the hand generally goes south - just as the improvisation will go south, as well.

Similar situation last night for me, except I was the one doing the sucking in . . .

Down to the final two players at a NLHE SNG. The guy I'm playing against is SUPER tight, won't play with me unless he has a huge hand, and he refuses to chase draws. For about 25 minutes we're pushing money back and forth to each other. I decide that since I'm already in the money, I'm going to start challenging him. I'm going all-in with Ax, Kx, small pairs, suited connectors--but he won't get into a drawing war with me. So I go to option #2: The Trap. I get dealt AA in the big blind. He raises. I wait 30 seconds or so, then "hesitantly" call. Flop comes K-A-10. I bet, he raises. I pause for another 30 seconds . . . almost have him . . . then I push all-in with my set of Aces. He makes a lengthy pause, then calls. YES! he turns over K10 for top and bottom pair. Turn comes J. I'm counting my money. River comes Q. He makes a straight, and I get my ass handed to me in a brown paper bag.

I guess my point is, with the right cards you could have just as easily won that hand. Sucking someone in is an extremely risky move that just happened to pay off for her this time. Play the same hand again, and you'd probably outdraw her. You put enough pressure on her that it forced her to take a big risk to eliminate you--what more can you ask for?
