First final table! NL Strategy Realization, jordanc79, 28. Oct 2003 10:37

Trying not to make this a self-serving post, but I made my first final
table ever in an online tournament. Sunday night in the PokerStars 20+2
NLH, 393 entrants, came in 9th, paid a nice $133 towards my bankroll. I
don't play many tournaments though as I'm more suited making money playing
fixed limit ring games, hence a bit of my jubilation.

I play a very, very tight game in NL tourneys and really only enter pots
when holding premium cards. There's one major thing that I'm realizing
though - it's almost always incorrect to call. Basically, when you have
the upper edge at the moment, raise. If you believe your opponent is weak,
raise his bet with nothing. Don't risk your whole stack too often at all,
but fight for any sizeable pot you're in, especially if you're heads-up. I
understand now when players talk about fearlessness.

It seems like betting is more important than the cards you even hold.
Although studying players for the types of hands they raise, trapping
patterns, etc. is good, you typically don't have much time to effective do
this. I look for one main thing - fighters or non-fighters. Knowing who I
can bully around in pots seems to be HIGHLY informative to me. This is not
to say play like a maniac, but most NL play hinges on who wins when BOTH
players miss the flop.

Are there more experienced tournament players that agree with my
assessment and/or can add some insight on the subject?
