Win rates per 100 hands, Aisthesis, 28. Oct 2003 00:12

| I'm phrasing this "per 100 hands" simply because the poker tracker which I recently got on the recommendation of various people here (and am still very enthusiastic about) calculates it this way. I play mainly low stakes (usually .25/.50) and assorted tourneys. With some fluctuation, feel like I'm doing ok--at least I'm in the black. Roughly (I know there's no "magic number") how many BB's won per 100 hands would the experts here say would be a reasonable guideline for moving up to the next level? When are the experts (who I know are typically playing much better opponents) disappointed with their BB/100 hand rate and when are they happy? I think that would be a pretty decent guideline. | ||

| I would think that 100/hands = about 1.5/hrs? maybe less. But if that is the case then you would want to average ATLEAST 3BB per 100 hands. I have never played micro limit but I would think that you should probably average more than that. I think most everyone agrees that what's important when looking a win rate is total time played. Anything can happen over a period of 1-3months so these stats like win rate while interesting for personnal use really provide very little information. I would pay more attention to how you are doing with certain hands from various positions, how tight you are playing, and how AGGRESSIVE you are being with your winning hands. As far as moving up. Most will tell you to wait, I on the other hand don't see a problem with moving up and testing out the higher (if 1-2, 2-4 can be considered higher) limits. IMO, there is very little if any difference between the players until you reach $5-10. However you need to realize and be prepared for the inevitable bad run which will knock you bankroll for a loop. The higher the limit the more this is going to hurt. That is the real danger of moving up. | ||

Then, if you are well read and think you can play at all, move up to the 1-2 table. I disagree that there is little difference up until 5-10...The players below .50-1 (and occasionaly at these limits) play just horrible. It is a total crapshoot. And while some say you can win at these levels, and I did a bit, it was way to frustrating. 1-2 is where you can avoid the complete and total idiots who think "well heck it is only a quarter more" or whatever. The difference between players at 1-2 vs 5-10 may not be any different, but below 1-2 I think there is.

| The 3 BB/100 hands sounds re-assuring. I was kind of thinking more like 10+ (that's basically one BB for every full round on the table) over a period of at least 1000 hands would indicate that you're quite strong relative to the competition. Or do you think 10+ is just hopelessly unrealistic over statistically relevant periods of time? I'm beginning also to wonder if I'm phrasing things right in describing the tables I'm playing at: What I MEANT anyway with .25/.50 was not the LIMIT but the blinds. I always play no-limit holdem, but I have the impression that wasn't very clear. Should I have said $50 no-limit tables? Any comments as to the going terminology for all this would be much appreciated, too... :) | ||

| Yeah the NL part kind of changes things. Thats tough but you need to work out some sort of risk vs. reward formula for yourself. Basically you are risking $50 every hand or 100%. Let's say at limit the most you would lose would be 10BB/hr and you want to earn 2BB/hr. Thus reward/risk = 20%. Taking it to No Limit would be 20%* $50 = $10/hr. This was done on the fly but seems about right. The 10/bb hr max lose was a Guess on my part and is what you need to figure out. | ||

| Hmmmm... very interesting. Sounds like you're viewing around 20% as the "magic number" for risk/reward. Hence, $10 per hour or in actuality 20 BB's per hour. Are really good players actually able to sustain win rates like that? Translated into 100 hands (which even online, as you say, takes more than an hour), that would mean, in addition to compensating for anything you lose on the two blinds, picking up at least two extra ones every time the button comes around. | ||

| No I am saying that if you are going to risk $50 on everyhand you should look for a higher return. | ||
