| Hey everyone, This weekend I played in a 50 person $100 buy in NLHE tourney put on locally. My game has been really going well lately and I was looking forward to this tourney. It was the 2nd event of this kind I've played in, the first time was several months ago and I played very poorly. I was out to redeem myself. I started my preperation out a few days before hand by not playing any poker at all, I wanted to get away from playing for a few days but at the same time I did a bunch of reading to brush up on aspects of my game that needed work. I reread parts of The Tao of Poker and Super System. I also watched some WSOP Tapes. During this time I also avoided alchohol and kept well hydrated and ate properly. On the big day I excersized in the morning and was feeling great. I showed up and drew a table where I knew no one. The buy in got you 3000 chips, blinds started at 25/25 and escalted every 30 minutes. I quickly saw I was at perhaps the most passive table I've ever seen in my life. A bunch of really terrible players as well. I played tight and decided I would be pretty limited on my ability to make moves on anyone here at this table. My reads were dead on. I picked up tells, read hands right and slowly built my stack in these early stages. My table image was strong and it started to get hard for me to get any action. I avoided and big pots until one hand where I was in the BB and I got in for free with 75o. The flop clobbered me with 757 rainbow. I checked one weak loose played checked. next card was a J I checked he be 500, about the size of the pot and I came over the top all in, I really sold it too. I had him covered by about 3000 chips and he called. Bam ,My first take down(I would end up with about 7 by the end of the night). with the blinds at about 200/400 I was moved to a much stronger table. Here I made a few moves and took out two more strong players. One was getting short and went all in with A10s and my pocket 10's held up. As tables consolidate my cards got ice cold. I did a great job of holding onto my chips and making a few moves to outlast the drought. Soon enough I was sitting at the final table (Top 5 payed out) I was in about mid position chipwise, there were two big stacks and 4 really short ones with 4 of us in the middle. Now the blinds were 800/1600 with a 100 ante. First hand at the final two short stacks go out to anther short stack and its down to 8. My cards remain Ice cold but a few steals from unobvious positions work for me and I hold tight. Before I know it I'm in the money. I get to double through but soon I'm short stacked and in third place out of three remaining. Then the cards hit me and I can't get any action. Three hands in a row JJ, KK, AA and no action, at this level these guys can afford to wait me out and fold to my allins . Blinds are now 1K/2K with 200 antes, I'm at about 10K the big stacks are well over 60K each. With three of us the antes and blinds are eating me. On the fourth hand I'm in the BB With AQs, button folds BB Calls, I of course desperate to doudle through go all in, He calls right away with AA. A queen hits the flop but I miss my two outer and I'm out in third place. My Payout was right around $1000 and I was so stoked. Thanks to all of you here for the knowledge you've shared. Most importantly, how to play position, read players and make moves when cards are cold. I couldn't have done it without you guys. By the way I actually won a $50 ghost bounty. There were three out there and I popped one! Thanks again, and I hope to regail you of more victory stories in the future. | ||
