Online Berating--Please Explain, Bart Mann, 27. Oct 2003 08:00

Good Morning:

This past weekend I was killing some time playing in a $10 buy-in NLHE SNG at UB, when another player made some disparaging remarks that I simply don’t understand. I was wondering if anyone could help me out here. Here’s the breakdown:

THE HAND

This was early in the tournament, and there were still plenty of people left. I get dealt QQ in middle position with nearly my whole stack of chips (T1000) still intact. With a hand like this, I usually abandon my early-stage tournament strategy of staying the heck out of the way and at least see a flop. 1 player in EP makes a bet of T200. I’m not sure how to interpret this, because we’re still early in the tournament, so I put him on AA, KK or AK for now. I call the bet, and the flop comes Q-9-4 rainbow. He immediately bets T200 again. Since the queen in the flop doesn’t even slow him down, I narrow his hand to either AA or KK. I decide that instead of possibly scaring him away with a reraise or an all-in bet, I want all of this guy’s chips. Risky, I know, but bear with me. I pause for about 30 seconds, then “hesitantly” call. Turn comes 7. He bets 200 again, I hesitantly call again. River comes 2. No flush possibility, no straight possibility. I’ve got top set and the nuts. He pushes all in for about T400 and I call. He flips over AA, I show my QQ and take down a hug pot.

THE AFTERMATH

Toward the middle of the next hand I see a message in the chat window from the player I just eliminated.

“It ******* figures that something like this would happen at UB. So ******* typical.”

A reply from someone else at the table quickly follows:

“No ****, man. You got screwed.”

Curious as to what they were referring to, I typed “What do you mean?” The player, apparently not realizing that I was the one who knocked him out, responds with:

“You’re naïve if you don’t know.”
“This **** happens at UB all the time.”
“None of us can ever win.”

Now I’m not new to B&M poker, but I’ve only been playing online for about two months. What the heck does this mean? Was he accusing me of bad play? Or was he saying that I somehow work for the house? I just don’t get it. And the most confusing part about it was, there were at least two other people at the table who jumped in and agreed with him. Are the people at the low-limit tables just prone to be disgruntled, or do they believe they have a legitimate beef? Any help here would be appreciated.

Many Holdem players, especially online, think AA wins everytime and go on unexplained tirades when it does not. I think he was even more upset that you played it very well and didn't give him a shot to fold. I had the same thing happen on Party yesterday where I called a small raise with 77 and hit the set. Smooth called the flop and turn and then put him all in on the river. He went on a 5 minute tirade until the tourney chip leader told him he was outplayed and to shut up and go home. This happens all the time, I usually ignore it or tell them to go all in pre flop with AA if you don't want callers.

since ive been playing UB last year people have been saying that UB is rigged and has more than a normal amount of bad beats. anytime one happens they bitch about how its proof that the site is rigged. usually they dont truly believe it but just have selfcontrol problems.
some people online don't seem to know that there are many more hands per hour (and looser play) that results in more "bad beats".
and because of the anon. nature of the internet, people whine way more than in live situations. that and some of these people are actually just little bratty kids playing.

If you actually thought the site was rigged or had a shuffling flaw why would you continue to play there?? Show the state of mind of those 'blame everything but my own play' players.

Hey-

I play UB all the time, and see a lot of comments like that. Basically they think the only erason you caught a Q is because it was UB. What it really comes down to is that they are not good players and will blame anything but their bad play on a loss.

BTW, they will call this a bad beat 'till Tuesday, but it's not. While he didn't need to catch anything to beat your QQ, you only needed to catch one card to beat his, and you had 5 cards to do it in. This is not calling a raise with 72o and catching a 7 and 2 on the turn and river after calling tremendous bets with nothing. THAT would be a bad beat.

Hi Bart,

They weren't accusing you of anything- not bad play or working for the house. They were trying to insinuate that UB is rigged and that his hand was "supposed" to win. Anyone that really feels that way shouldn't even bother to play internet poker then, but I sure as hell wouldn't mind having players like that, with that kind of mentality, in my game!!

And then there's the Paradise Poker Curse (big news when they were the biggest site), the PartyPoker Curse (big news now), and the (YourSiteHere) Curse.

Online poker ebbs and flows. When it ebbs people are quick to say it was there good play. When it flows, everything is blamed except their bad play or just pure luck.

Ignore it. Let 'em steam. It's wonderful to play players on tilt.
