Depends on what type of tournament you are talking about. If you want to do both NL and Limit Hold'em, I suggest you get the "Tournament Hands" book from Cloutier/McEvoy. The two books specifically on each game are both very good as well. The Sklansky book is OK, but I would just borrow it from somebody and read the chapter on "The Gap Concept" which is the best part of the book by far. Also, you MUST get "Theory of Poker" if you need refresher on general poker theory of betting odds, etc...

Basically that when it tightens up in a tournament that you can raise with many more hands when nobody has shown strength. When someone has shown strength, usually you have to give them more credit for a hand in a tournament since everyone has a finite bankroll (unless of course they are using the gap themselves). The "Gap" is the distance between a hand that you would raise with if it were checked to you and the hand that you would need to call if somebody has already opened. It's not something new, it's just a nifty name and a very clear explanation of it in Sklansky's book. Personally, I like the first few chapters of Sklansky's book, but it really doesn't focus in enough on specifics later in the book. Also, the examples jump around to all these different games and it comes across as a bit scattered.

Anyway, the Gap more important later in the tournament when the stack sizes differentiate and some of the loosest players get knocked out. If you have several calling stations in the game, there might not even be a gap.
