Should I fold?, Dr. Acula, 27. Oct 2003 01:47 | ||

| Sunday Special 200+15 NL on PP, 1400+ entrants. I start out at table #16 which has an unusual development. 15 minutes into the tourney I find myself with 3000 chips (starting with 1000) after flopping some nut hands and having ppl pay me off with suboptimal hands. Bust another player in the next 15 minutes and sit on 3700 - 4000 chips for quite a while without finding a playable hand. What happens within the first hr of the tourney is that I suddenly have 5 more ppl on my table with comparable stacks to mine, due to us getting more than our fare share of whackos willing to all-in themselves on terrible bluffs, drawing hands and what not. This meant I didn't get to work the early chip lead to any conventional advantage as I usually do, and here's what happens when the second hr draws to an end; I've anted away and lost a key pot, so am left with 1350 chips when I find QQ in UTG+2. I raise the 75/150 blinds to 450 and the player to my immediate left pushes his stack of 3000 (approx avg. stack in the tourney, 405 players left at this point) in the middle. I consider folding, but decide on taking my chance I might not be behind already and letting it ride with the Q's. He has KK and I'm out. Sidenote: The KK guy had been playing fairly tight (although not as tight as myself), and I figured him to be good enough to notice I've played really few hands. Therefore, I knew that he knew I was most likely to have a legit hand when bringing it in for 450. Also, he had not once in the two hrs of play made a similar move (moved all in prior to flop). However, he had seen me make a couple of laydowns when I was the original raiser. Question 1: The raise to 450, too small? Question 2: Should I fold the Q's? Question 3: If not KK or AA, what is the likely range of hands I can put him on when he moves in on me here? Thx in advance for any insightful input! | ||

| Question 1: You were first to enter the pot right? 450 is fine. Question 2: Yes, definately. Based on your perception of this opponent, you have to fold this. Question 3: Maybe he has AK. You said yourself, he was a tight player. I think you caught a bit of fancy play syndrome, and imagined some sort of elaborate thinking-on-the-3rd-level bluff. Even if you assume you are ahead, what does he have that you would be willing to put all the chips in the middle? AQ or AJ? Maybe JJ? It doesn't sound like this player would do that. Basically, you had a read on this player and decided to play anyway, just in case. Lee | ||
