Betting draws in NL, SicSemper, 26. Oct 2003 10:36

I usually play limit, but I've been fooling around with NL SnG tourneys lately. I got into a situation where I was holding KQc and had a few callers after a pre-flop raise. The flop came 10Jx, no clubs, and there was T400 in the pot. Everyone checked to me. I bet out 400 hoping to take it down right then and there, which I did, but was that the right move?

Should I only have bet 100 to get the proper odds on my open ender, thereby letting 3 others in the pot, or is this a classic case of it being better to win a small pot than lose a big one?

Not sure what the chip situation was in this hand, which definitely impacts how you would bet a draw hand. However, my advice is that it is dangerous to make a small bet with a draw if you are in last position. The reason for this is that if someone makes a big checkraise, its likely that you won't be getting the proper price to continue with the hand. Now, instead of getting a free chance to draw to your hand, you are forced to fold. You avoid this disaster in two ways: checking, or betting big enough that you are pot committed.

A small bet is more appropriate from early position. I like this because you may win the pot immediately. Also, by betting small, you might encourage another player to just call your small bet. Its possible that this player would have bet the hand himself had it been checked to him, and he may have made a significantly larger bet. So, you might get to draw at your hand more cheaply by betting than you would have by checking. Of course, sometimes you bet small and are then faced with calling a big raise. You'll just have to consider the situation in order to make your decision when this happens.

Whenever everyone checks to you and you have a decent draw, you can make a reasonable bet. Since it was checked around to you, you will probably take it right then, if you don't you still have outs. The fact that the draws are present on the flop makes it unlikely that someone with a big pair is trying to trap you since they wouldn't want to give a free card that could beat them. It's a good percentage bet, and you don't want to make a small bet because it reduces the chance that you will take down the pot, and it invites an aggressive player to take the pot away from you. Sometimes when you bet small, an opponent will come over you with nothing and make you lay it down. Since the flop has cards in the "playing zone" a huge bet would be impossible and wrong for you to call. Just bet as if you have a hand already, and you will likely take it. Of course, a lot of this is dependent on stack size. A big stack is more likely to get cute with you, and you may not want to bet into someone who can easily call or raise because he's sitting behind a mountain of chips.

A bonus of this type of play is that if people have something and call, then you hit one of your outs, they may misread you and not put you on the draw, which might mean a good payoff.
