every saturday my local card room holds a limit hold em rebuy tourney. the buy in is only like $5 with a $300 garuntee, $10 rebuys for the first hour and 1 $10 AO. i'd like to try it, but it's so different from other tourneys i'm not sure how to play it right. the first hour seems like a complete gamble to me. unless you get lucky and win a big pot you'll be forced to re-buy and AO at the end just to have a formitable stack. what are some strategies for playing a re-buy tourney?

You'll have to count on several rebuys and addons, factor it into the budget. Nobody there is counting on playing for only $5. Rebuy before the tournament even starts so you can start with a healthy stack, then play a good game.

People will be much looser before the rebuy period is over. They will play hands you wouldn't call your dog with. I love the rebuy period because that's when I accumulate the vast majority of my chips. People aren't afraid to call when you raise and will sometimes re-raise you, even if you're holding quads or a str8 flush.

After the rebuy period EVERYONE tightens up, afraid of getting out. You'll get the occassional psycho who thinks they can boss you around with a raise all the time, but s/he will come up against a real hand and get out sooner than hoped. Just don't let tightness become a noose. Play "wrong" once in a while to throw people off and vary your speeds.

To illustrate- last night during the rebuy period someone called my all in bet on the flop with 4c2c, and two clubs (and nothing else for him) on the flop. He of course made the flush and beat the straight I flopped.

To illustrate again- same player called my all in bet on the flop when he had 75o and the flop was 972. He beat me because I was bluffing with a pair of 3's.

At least I got payback later since I was the one that sent him home and I got most of my chips back.

I don't love rebuy poker as much as PBG, but it usually works out better.
