| My hypothesis, on which I would be most interested in expert comments: Never bluff at a new table until you've established yourself as someone who doesn't bet frivolously. Two of my own experiences in this regard: The first one really contradicts my hypothesis. Sitting down at a new table, I decided I was going to make a very inexpensive and lame bluff right at the start, thus having everyone immediately put me in the bluffer category. And sure enough it did work. I got my good hands called for quite some time after making that first impression and made pretty good money at the table. But after that I concluded that there's really more money in the reverse setup (my hypothesis)--establishing oneself clearly as a non-frivolous player before making any attempt to buy a pot. And that hypothesis has worked well for me. A good example here was the comment of a friend of mine in after a 9-player tourney in which I placed 2nd: She said I would make a lot more money if I bluffed once in a while because I was never getting called on a serious bet. Well, what she didn't know was that I did buy several pots (not a lot but enough to be a bit of an edge). I just never got caught. Anyhow, I'm convinced that my hypothesis does work for me, but I'd be interested to know whether among top players it can be viewed as something of a hard and fast rule or whether there are quite a few top players who can successfully use a reputation as a bluffer to get called when aggressively betting a winning hand. I'm definitely assuming that the tendency among novice players such as myself is to bluff too often and that pros who bluff a lot by professional standards are VERY attentive as to when they can get by with it--i.e., VERY good at reading just how weak their opponents' hands are, what their outs are if they should get called, etc., etc. | ||
