| I was holding pocket nines on the button, so I raised. The flop comes Q 10 9 rainbow...so i trip my nines, the other guy checks it, i bet pot, he calls....I figure if he hit his straight he would raise me....so, put him on a draw or two pair....nexst card...8....i bet he calls, last card 2...h ebets the pot about 150.....i call...he flopped the nuts straight....but this guy bluffs alot so i just had to call and get beat. I am just wondering what the odds are on the board pairing so that i could have made my full house. Any other advice on how to play this hand would be helpful too. I have only been playing about 3 to 4 months. | ||

| You have a 33.4% of filling or making quads with two to come. How to play it is difficult to determine but you have given an important clue when you said that he often bluffs. Since he is very likely to bluff - I would have been concerned when he just called to the river. Put yourself in his position and think like he thinks. How does he play a nut straight if he flops it? How does he play a draw? Most habitual bluffers I know would be betting or raising on a draw and smooth calling with the nuts. | ||

| i was discussing this hand with him about a day or so after and he told me exactly what you just did...that he usually just calls when he has the nuts. Thanks for taking the time to read and give me some feedback. I am playing again this tuesday night so maybe now i can catch him and get some of my scratch back. This game will be about 5 or 6 handed...pretty loose....lots of money going back and forth. Any ideas how to bring most of it to me? | ||

| You didn't say but the game has to be either pot limit or no limit (you said he bet the pot but that could be done in NL too). I would want to know that before I answered, as well as whether there is alot of pre-flop raising and what the blind structure was. | ||

| oh, sorry it is a dollar blind for the dealer and it is pot limit. And about 95 percent of the time the potis raise by the player who beat me and that bluffs alot. One other thing...how am I supposed to play an aggressive player like that and be aggressive myself without causing a war at the table? | ||

| I'm not sure what the down side to a war at the table is but... This is the way I play it in situations that sound like what you are describing. With a single $1 blind you can afford to be much more selective than you could with two blinds. With a player who is maniac-material aggressive I just allow him to take the lead. Players like that are likely to dump a hand when you play back at them but will try to bully you out of the pot by betting all the way. So I let them try to bully me when I have the nuts. Don't hesitate to check to a person who will most assuredly bet if you do. Then call - don't raise unless your hand is particularly vulnerable and allow them to bet again next round. When you've allowed him to hang himself a few times he is going to be more wary around you. This is the time to change gears and attack by becoming much more aggressive. You weren't really being passive in the beginning - you were preparing your aggression. | ||
