Game selection and hourly rates, Angel, 24. Oct 2003 22:02

Although the following is a bit excessive - even for me it does reflect a trend with me that I wonder if anyone takes into account when tracking their results. I spent 16 hours over the last two days in the cardroom but only 7 hours playing. The reason is simply game selection. If I don't see a good game I'm not going to sit down. This isn't to say that I won't give up some action at times that I think are appropriate - but I won't do it indisciminately, especially when I'm out of town and this is not my day in and day out game.
Although 9 hours searching for games with only 7 hours playing is alot - even for me does anyone adjust hourly rates to account for this?

Hi Angel

I never do, but it is definitely a factor.... Since I have a busy schedule, that reason is why I like to play online, as the down time is HUGELY reduced.

Sounds like you are living your life in a cardroom waiting for a game!

What all goes into picking a table when you select one?

Thanks in advance

Good question. Although this may seem obvious its worth pointing out because so many people seem to forget it: You want to play against players you can beat. Being the 9th best player in the world does you little good if you're sitting down with the top 8. Likewise, being the 17,648th best player in the world is quite an advantage when you are sitting down with a table full of guys who haven't broke the top 100,000.
So how do you know? Well, the simplist way is that you might actually know some of the players in the game. If you do and you know that you are better than they are - this may be the game for you.
Don't be too quick to pass on a game where there is a couple of tough players. If you know that they highly value game selection themselves then the fact that they found this a good game might make it worth a look - even with them in it.
Games that are passive are good. If you don't see alot of pre-flop raising and there is little value betting going on - this is going to be a good game.
Loose games are also good. Are the players calling pre-flop with Q6o or 73s?
Are people drawing at hands they have no business drawing to? (ie: pot odds not even close)
Are there few showdowns? Are they playing 'bet and take it' poker? In that case if you are an aggressive player then this is a chip buffet for you.
