| Okay, I was just invited to a house game tonight. 5-6 players, 7HE, 2-4. I only have enought to buy in with $120. It's funny just as we were talking about bankroll, this would happen. Now I have a greeat feeling that there will be loose players with not much skill. Does anybody have advice on how I should play ? I am sure that there is at least 1000 to be had tonight because they are buying in at 200. p.s. Not playing is not an option that I am considering. ---------R TY | ||

| Hey Robert, This is limit hold-em correct? Take your $120, sit down and play solid poker. Nothing fancy, just good, solid, level-headed poker. Just a little reminder here.....a good win for a $2-4 game is around 75 to 100 bucks, and anything over that, is outstanding in my opinion! Good luck tonight. 4P- P.s. (don't drink alcohol while you play- that's my advice). | ||

| Actually, that's a pretty good piece of advice. Small blinds mean you don't have a whol lot invested in any given pot, so you play tight. If the blinds are big, you must loosen up a little and protect them more often. In a structured limit game, this is rarely a consideration, because the blinds are almost always the same proportion to the betting structure. But in NL games, it can be a major factor, especially as related to how much money you bring to the table. -Moz "That's excellent. We knew you'd agree. The companies will be very pleased." | ||

Ben I learned this long ago but it was reiterated by a so so poker player named Annie Duke. She just messes around in the nickle and dime games. Your much more apt to be correct than a no name player like Annie or her Brother Howie L , who seconded this contention. you *can* do this even in limit because winning one pot can make up for many many preflop or 3rd street mucks. there is no way you have to fade a better hand going in in games like this. Like you must if the pots were smaller in relation to the Blinds or antes. It is like a very small ante in a limit stud game. I would reccomend it for someone playing a very loose game with a short stack | ||

| Well its nice to see someone who is so garcious in their argument ..who doesn't use sarcasm..........perhaps I mis-read......it would have been nice to simply be set straight ...and not embarassed......your right though......I should have never questioned your extensive knowledge of poker......afterall I know nothing at all .............. I misunderstood what you were saying.........I assumed that you were saying the pots were large......in comparison to the blinds........that is......there are many callers preflop.......increasing your pot odds.......so your playing in a loose game.......(if, on average, there are many callers = loose game) .....so I thought you were saying in this situation you should tighten up which IS incorrect.......but I misread the situation .......but i thank you for making me feel stupid ........its funny........I have a feeling some of the pros ...and names I have actually head of .....including Annie Duke and her (or Mr.Caro, Roy Cooke, David Sklansky, 'Howie L') don't make those learning feel stupid ......they simply and kindly set them straight ......yet.........those that are average take it upon themselves to thoroughly embarass someone who makes a mistake ........we all know you have never made one timmer | ||

| But it is only correct if you have a short stack and the games are loose and your tolerance for risk or risk to reward ratio is such that make playing in such a manner a bonus. In fact you should probably play more hands coming in if it is not to expensive and/or if the betting on the later rounds is usually not raised AND the players are not bluff raising. Home games tend to be very stable and have a texture that is quite definable with time. Given these attributes I would suggest that after a reasonable period of time the player from the original post start playing normally or even more hands than normal even considering his having a shorter than normal stack. However in a truly wild game he might want to stick to these very tight starting requirements even though his BR has grown noticeably. But this tactic will only work for a limited period of time because being a tight ass has a chilling effect on the atmosphere of most home games. And all but the dimmest of players will eventually start stealing you blind. You might think that this will happen right away and it will. That is why you must save your bullets for an all out fire fight that is almost sure to come. And you must have the cards to back it up. Being a newbie the more aggressive players will take shots at you and you need the stuff to play back at them . Once you have put them back on their heels a few times they will figure you for a tougher cookie than they have initially thought and give you more respect when you come in. After a few nights of this you might be getting too much respect . Now is the time to open you game up some. And don't get defensive when some one comes back over the top of you now. They likely have a pretty good hand. | ||
