Does anyone know how tournament seating is done?

Getting ready to help some friends run one this weekend.

Let's say we have 40 players. 5 tables of 8.

If one table loses two players quickly, should I automatically grab a player from a random table to fill one of the seats.

I would think that I want to try and keep all the tables with the same amount of people.

Does it matter how we randomly pick a person to fill that spot?

Do you ever redo all of the seating? Say when it gets down to 24 or 32 players you reassign seats for EVERYONE.

Thanks,

TKarrde

Thanks, 4P! Great place. I still come and read now and then. Just haven't had as much free time lately. But I always know where I can go for answers and advice!

Sounds like a lot of fun. Wish I could participate!!

The key is to ensure that the following principles are adhered to:

Randomness - There should be no rhyme or reason for moving players from one table to another. Stack counts and relationships should be disregarded when moving players.

Closing Tables - It is essential that closing tables is the main objective of hosting a tournament. If you have chosen 8 player tables, be sure to close a table after 8 are removed, another after 16, etc. etc.

Consistency - There shouldn't be an environment where you have 3 players at one table and 8 at another. Try to keep a consistent player count at all tables until you are ready to close one.

Record Keeping - By keeping proper records (chip counts, time played, etc) you are able to forecast when changes should occur. Granted poker can have some very quick action, but in tournament play it's relatively predictable when %'s of players will be knocked out. Plus, it adds to the professionalism of the event if there is a leaderboard available.

Hope this helps and good luck.

One more thing- if you're moving a single player into a BB, make sure you take someone that's on the BB at their table so it's fair.

Would it be okay to just wait a hand to go by so that he is not the Big Blind? And not worry about what position they came from on the other table.

Sure, whatever you want to do. In the situations though when you have to (or can) fill a big blind at another table, it's important to make sure someone doesn't get screwed by paying twice.

While i agree with Eli that you don't want to screw someone, I subscribe to the theory that by moving players you are bound to screw somebody no matter how hard you try. For every time you move someone into the BB, you could easily drop 3 people on the kind side of the button.
