| I'm playing in .50 / 1.00 games on Party Poker. I also play in the $10 to $30 SNG tourneys. I'm doing OK finishing top 3 in a majority of the tourneys and winning a little in the .50 game. I'm just playing for a few hours a week. Is it possible to think too much in these games. What I'm asking I guess is should I really be worried about being slowplayed and having other "expert" plays put on me or is it all about waiting for your pair to flop a set and hammering away. Am I giving the people in these low limit games and tourneys too much credit. In B&M rooms I play 10/20 and do ok. Don't really get to play all that much. I also play in a 10 dollar limit game once a week. Just trying to see if anyone has a feel for these low limit games online. | ||

| Hi CA Solid play of solid cards will get the money in the low limit online games. I wouldn't worry too much about opponents making fancy plays, although you'll see some strange plays at those limits. Roy Cooke on 24. Oct 2003 02:37 C.A. | I had that happen last night to me at PokerStars freeroll no limit tourney. I had Q 9 suited and bet it out as BB so I could knock just about anyone out of the pot with a marginal hand while isolating for a heads up match, which ended up being with someone who had an equal amount as I did(2500). Flop came out 7d-Qh-10h. Since I got my Q and had a draw, I made a pot sized bet since I sensed he had a weak hand paired with my tight table image going for me this tourney though I didn't think he gave a damn about that with his call. Turn came up a 10c and bet it out again only to be reraised so I knew he had the third ten. I called it anyway since I was already in the pot for quite a few chips (4000). The River brought me 9 h at last for my flush. I confidently bet out all my chips but he called me to show 9 10 off suit for his boat. I thought I was stringing him along with my bets but ended up losing to THAT kind of hand. I asked him why he played that hand in the first place, he said because its a freeroll, its fake chips anyway. I think that is the mentality in the low limit or free section of poker, for they don't see any consequence to those bets or calls. In general, all the fish see is giving up one or two dollars to possibly win a pot of 30 or so regardless of what their odds are. Logic has little place with them. | ||

| I see people playing heads up with draws, even bad ones all the time. It is a disease that I really like to see my opponents catch, chronically. In NL you can bust some one if they hit. One the other hand you can lose 100,s of tourneys when they don't. | ||

| Yeah I agree with Roy ( can't go wrong doing that too often haha). Most of the time you could play with your cards face up in the .5/1 and make money. I mean honestly if you flop a full house I've bet out before and gotten called by multiple people on the flop, turn, and river. People pay you off like crazy on low limit hold'em online. There's no need to get tricky until you move up in limits because trying to detect 'advanced' plays aren't worth your time and trying them yourself is even dumber. The people aren't smart enough to be tricked or to do the tricking. :) | ||

I flopped an open ended straight flush draw (T-K). The turn completed the royal flush. It also gave someone something else, not sure what I wasn't paying much attention at this point I was too dang happy. He continued to reraise me each time. Made a nice 40$ or so that hand.... Very next hand, Im in the SB with AA. It gets capped preflop before reachign me. Well that was certainly interesting. I end up with another 40$ pot with a set of A's. Very next hand, KK (yeah I was having a good afternoon :) This time I only got 10-13 or so, only one caller. But he had nothing at all, and called me down to the river (actually I think he folded to me on the river). I take notes on any play I see that makes me go "hmm". I never fail to be suprised at how many people raise preflop with 4/6o. Or go all in during a tourney with 10/2o (can you tell which book they just read?). In fact, I moved up tables pretty quickly just to get to a more "sane" method of playing. I do so much better at 1/2 than I ever did at .25/.50 tables. | ||

| I honestly would have to agree with this. I have seen a few people post saying you should be able to win at the .25/50 tables before moving up. I could break even, but there were days it was so dang frustrating. People calling 4 bets with 7/2o and hitting a full. Over time you should take them to the bank, but it sure can be annoying. .50/1.00 was much better. But about every other hour you would have one maniac (I prefer the term idiot). I was able to consistently win here though. So when UB had the deposit bonus going, I put more in and tried 1-2. I've been winning ever since. | ||

| the key to maximizing profits in Low limit is to manuever players into losing more to your winning hands. Betting strategies are paramount in doing this. Playing strategies are largely lost on the low limit players. what we are talking about here is; setting your self up to win a much larger pot , stopping bluffs, giving your self better pot odds and free cards by making one additional small bet at the appropriate time example you start with a live small 3 card straight in 7 stud with the low card showing. you bring it in and get called around. you know if you miss that you are 8:1 to finish it if you stay alive and play through the river. on 4th street you pair your small door card. Now you know that betting out will get a few callers. But two pair could win against two other opponents. However you would like a free card so you check. You would hope that they check it around fearing trips. MAny things about this you would like. namely a free card to improve, keeping the pot small thereby setting you up for a field/odds limiting or stealing big bet on 5th in the case that no one improves in sight and you do. Calling or Raising this Bet can force them into announcing the relitive strength of their hands. This added information makes your play fold decision clearer. However when the high card hand bets you raise the field. trapping many half bets. Now some will fold and some will stay But few can get to tricky with you because you shown early strength. They will often play their hands straightforwardly often checking hands with which they would normally bet. Plus you've effectivly stopped most any one from bluffing If you improve to a straight especially on the river dont try for a checkraise. even against a fairly aggressive opponent that you read for a med strong hand (one that cant beat trips) If you have even a slightly deceptive image (which check raising gives you) bet out. you will most likely get the remaining players to call or fold (saving you from a showdown but you still get the pot). if you check even those players described above will check and muck when you beat them. (Online you do get to see their cards with the help of the hand histories you are saving for later review this is one place where I would condone slowrolling [ B&M ] and trying to show your hand last)) If you show first you dont get to see what they will risk playing against possible trips with which is information I value. However if you bet they may call with those medium strength hands and you will get to see. Because they think you have been pulling their chain. Which of course you have. But the great thing is that they will pay you off with the usually strong hands you normally play. . Weak low limit players will often think you are lying which is one of the reasons they call so much. bottom line is if you stop a bluff you need to bet especially on the river when you have improved to a fairly good hand. Dont try to get in a check raise here because your strong betting action early in the hand make them much more likely to check the river now and in the future and makes it less likely for them to raise the river in the future with anything but fairly strong hands | ||

| I want to add that you might have to totally change your strategy if the initial 4th street bettor makes it a large bet to go . Because of the difference in pot odds that you are getting It might be most correct to fold your small pair 3 straight right here or instead bet out hoping the others will define their hands through their normal range of actions in response to this bet whether it be a half bet or a full bet. | ||
